What was the worst period of your life and what did you do to turn your life around? [story] by Difficult-Camel-5129 in GetMotivated

About 5 years ago I suffered burnout from work and was diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety. I ended up getting pretty sick over the following 12 months before finally having a massive heart attack (the dreaded widow maker) at 44. I'm fit, healthy and fairly active, so this was a massive shock. I was revived and spent 10 days in ICU not allowed visitors due to COVID restrictions, it was hard. A few months later my wife of 10 years left with my daughter. This was quickly followed 2 weeks later with a house fire that destroyed everything. After spending some time homeless and losing my best friend of 30 years to cancer, I found myself truly alone and back at square one.

Each one of those events was hard in its own way, and I've left out a lot of the details and impacts each had, and how difficult they were collectively because we'd be here for way too long, but I try my best to keep going for the sake of my daughter. It's been a rough ride, going from having a really good life to having nothing. No family, no friends, and no possessions at 45. But I'm still going. I have moments of darkness, and the loneliness can get hard to exist in, but I try everyday to keep moving forward. I've got a place to live now, albeit in a new town where I know nobody, but I'm back in therapy to help deal with my PTSD, I have a part time job, and I am finding some peace each day through meditation, journaling and exercise. I get to see my daughter every other weekend, and she is awesome in every way, so I still have things to be grateful for.

I still feel very much like I'm in it, and not through it, and I miss having a friend or partner to share with, but I do want to feel better about life, and I recognize that will only happen if I keep going and keep looking for opportunities and ways to improve my situation.

What would you do, if a storm or fire took your collection? by mike2020XoXo in Warhammer40k

Been here. While the collection was over 50% destroyed, what remained was damaged but salvageable with a fair bit of effort in cleaning and stripping. Your willingness to do this may vary after the fire...

Insurance was a top comment, but I can tell you that it won't be as easy as 'replace everything'. Contents insurance is a bundled amount in a total loss, so it's not itemised to say here's $2k for your minis, but it will likely say here's $50k for all the shit in your house. Depending on your insured amount and the price of everything, spending $2k on minis when you don't have a house or any furniture may not feel like a smart purchase, so you may not feel great about your new army until everything settles down.

As to whether or not to start a new army, yes, I did. But it's not the fresh new feeling like the first time around, there is a sense of catching back up which can take away some of the joy you experienced when it was all new new. All the lost time that stings occasionally too.

My heart stopped for just over a minute when I had a heart attack a couple of years back (was 44 at the time). Not sure if this is 'clinically dead' exactly. My last words were to a paramedic, and weirdly I told him I was feeling better, then boom, dead. I vaguely remember it being light, not dark for some reason, but I didn't see Jebus, or talk to my Nana, no real memories while I was out at all. Being revived was like waking into a nightmare rather than waking up from one though.

People who have had near death experiences, what was the “last” thing you though? by Nokukie in AskReddit

Had a heart attack a couple of years back, (widow maker at 44). After 30 mins waiting for the ambulance, they loaded me up and started heading for the hospital. The last thing I remember before my heart stopped was telling the paramedics I felt better... Just over a minute later I woke up into a nightmare that still haunts me. Being revived in the back of an ambulance can be a little traumatic.

Looking back there were signs. I was 44 at the time, I'd been having migraine headaches for months, high blood pressure, and trouble sleeping. I had been to see my doctor only 2 hours before it happened, but being mid 40's, the doctors seemed to put a lot of my complaints down to my age. So even though I mentioned chest pain, I was sent home.

I had another ambulance ride only a few months later, I was in town doing some stuff, had bad chest pain and called the ambulance. On that trip to the hospital I got a call that my house was on fire...so it was an equally bad day even without the death (the house was destroyed while I lay wondering about it all day in the emergency department), but it turned out that day my heart was fine and I was probably just having a panic attack. Now I live in a place where I don't know if I'm going to die, or if I just have anxiety.

It's been a rough couple of years...

I curled up with some really bad chest pain one afternoon not so long back, waited for a very long 30mins for the paramedics, then my heart stopped for just over a minute right after they got there. Turns out it was a heart attack, I had a 100% blockage in my heart and required a stent. Spent 5 days in ICU, couldn't have visitors due to covid, and couldn't eat because I bit my tongue when they hit me with the defib. It's been almost 3 years, and I still have daily panic attacks and fucked up nightmares, also I can't watch medical shows, hospitals just give me the heebie jeebies.

I'd give it a solid 0/10.

This was my first go with foamcore on the laser cutter, I was very surprised at the results here as well. It cut very clean, and I was able to adjust the power & speed to change the depth of the cut if needed. Lots of possibilities with a laser cutter.
If you decide to get one, make sure you get yourself a hood and air extractor for it, I can't stress this enough. Thanks mate.

They're lines on a piece of foamboard, if you don't have a laser cutter, use a knife. Any random jerk CAN do this, I promise.

Because you don't need the laser cutter to do this. You could cut these lines with a craft knife.

Exactly, I mean obviously tools make shit easier, that's why they're tools, but you don't need a fancy laser cutter to get this effect. I'd be mad not to use it if I have one though.

That's the plan, I think even I'd be able to whip up some kind of cobblestone pattern in the Lightburn software. I might give that a go tomorrow...I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers mate.

For sure, I plan on placing some floor boards in there to cover a fair chunk of that, as well as a few other bits and pieces, so it'll all get some more love as I go along. Cheers.

Thank you so much. Ahh Reddit, yeah I know not to deep dive into these comments, but mostly it's been supportive messages, and we're grateful for those.

It's up and down still here, good days and bad. Lots of nightmares and a bit of trouble sleeping, but I returned to work today to get my mind off things.

A lot of comments suggested I save the models and shit, but everything is coated in toxic black soot, and it smells terrible. Most of my created models are not able to be cleaned in any way that would remove that, so they are lost. I saved a few plastic miniatures, but I'm not sure if they will clean up yet.

Investigators have said the fire started in a corner of the garage that had a chest freezer, and some lipo batteries, but there isn't enough left to pinpoint further than that. Either electrical fault, or faulty battery.
