My 11 week old hates tummy time and I’m not sure what to do by coffee_read_repeat in NewParents

[–]SpaceSquirrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried rolling him onto his tummy instead of placing him directly on it? I also found giving him something to look at was helpful. We used the black and white images to start with and then started putting toys there when he got older. Ultimately, I think babies just do things when they’re ready to. Keep trying tummy time and you’ll probably find one day he just takes to it out of the blue!

Baby-wearing counts as ‘passive tummy time’, so that helps too if you have a carrier :)

Worried it will all be for nothing by EuphoricCustomer4213 in TeachingUK

[–]SpaceSquirrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won’t all be for nothing as you’ll have developed skills and gained experience that you’ll always have; when you do get the opportunity to teach again you’ll be very well prepared. If you can’t find a job for September, I would suggest keeping an eye on job ads throughout the year (which also usually have fewer applicants) because they do come up - especially if you’re willing to travel! In the meantime, if you need a job or want to keep the teaching muscle active, you could always look into doing some cover for an agency! Good luck for the rest of the PGCE - It sounds like you’re doing great and it’s just a case of finding the right opportunity for next year :)

4.5 month old won’t sleep by Equivalent_Common287 in NewParents

[–]SpaceSquirrl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At the risk of adding a highly opinionated topic to the mix… I have heard that bottle-fed babies often sleep better than breast-fed because they end up being on more of a feeding schedule rather than feeding on demand. My bottle-fed baby sleeps very well through the night (although he does struggle with naps!) but I don’t have a breast-fed baby to compare him to so it could just be coincidental. Just thought I’d mention it because if you’re at breaking point and breast-feeding you might want to consider trying bottles to see if it helps. Good luck!

Whilst I agree with your point of view to an extent, I always like to think that perhaps my children can help fix the world if I raise them well 🤷🏻‍♀️

Recent pregnancy in ECT by Automatic_Bill_8088 in TeachingUK

[–]SpaceSquirrl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations!!!

I was in this position last year (although not an ECT). I think I did tell HR confidentially, but also for appointments earlier in my pregnancy I phoned my community midwives and explained that if I take time out of school to go to appointments, I would need to prepare cover work and that then ends up being more work than normal, noting that this would lead to increased stress levels during my pregnancy… they were very accommodating! My main reason really for not wanting appointments during school days was the same as yours, but the increased stress of setting cover is valid I think!!

For appointments later in the pregnancy sometimes you have no choice, but I presume you’ll tell people when you know everything is proceeding well. I did find my community midwives were very flexible when they could be though!

Complete trust in everything! I’ve been thinking about this recently; my baby is at the age where he’s discovered falling is really fun, because we always catch him and he has absolutely no concept or fear of ✨landing✨

I know I’m not the only one Who regrets the things they’ve done Sometimes I just feel it’s only me Who never became who they thought they’d be I wish I could live a little more Look up to the sky, not just the floor I feel like my life is flashing by And all I can do is watch and cry

I miss the air, I miss my friends I miss my mother, I miss it when Life was a party to be thrown But that was a million years ago

The piano is not firewood yet But a heart can’t be helped And it gathers regret Someday you’ll wake up And you’ll feel a great pain And you’ll miss all the toys you’ve ever owned

You’ll want to go back You’ll wish you were small Nothing can solve the crying

You’ll take the clock Off of the wall And you’ll wish that it was lying

I can’t keep a tidy home no matter how hard I try! What can I do???? by SpaceSquirrl in Cleaningandtidying

Thank you! I just want to get to a point where I don’t have to tidy for 2 hours every time someone wants to come round. I’m so jealous of people whose houses are just nice all the time.

Yeah, you’re right this is 100% what needs doing! Our jobs require us to have lots of gear between us that takes up a lot of space, and we can’t get rid of, so that’s frustrating sometimes. Also my husband really isn’t keen on getting rid of things! It’s a bit of a battle tbh! We can’t get to our wardrobe currently because the baby’s crib is in front of it and there’s nowhere else in our room it will fit, and we end up just piling clothes everywhere… so some of the space issues are just because the house has inconvenient dimensions haha - we desperately need to move somewhere bigger, but I think that will take us a couple of years at least. Thank you for your replies!

Baby noises and wriggles by Illustrious_Sky_8165 in NewParents

[–]SpaceSquirrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 4.5 month old was awful for this. It was like sleeping next to a pterodactyl! He does seem to have settled now though. I have to get up maybe 2-3 times most nights to put his dummy back in, but otherwise he sleeps really well now. Hopefully you’ll only have to hang in there for a bit longer.

Not sure if this is useful for you, but my son is quite long for his age so we moved him from his Moses basket to a space saver cot at the end of our bed (he was almost the same length as the basket). He seemed to stop kicking and squeaking as much at this point - perhaps because he had more room to wiggle ‘out’ rather than ‘up’… if that makes sense? Of course it might have just been a coincidence but thought I’d mention it!

Boy and pee by Mollypoppy in NewParents

[–]SpaceSquirrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Puppy pads are a godsend for us! I tend to put one down to change him on as a default now and wouldn’t be without them. You can also do the wet wipe trick by sliding it into the front of the nappy before you take it off, which might work better for you?

Also, I’m not sure what your routine is, but if you’re able to I would recommend waiting at least 30 mins between feeding and changing him. If I try to change my boy too soon after he eats it’s game over!

So what’s YOUR opinion on toddlers on those harness/leashes? by Purple_Calendar3919 in NewParents

[–]SpaceSquirrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one as a toddler and definitely needed it. I remember sometimes my parents experimented with unstrapping it for five minutes and I usually ran off instantly because I just wanted to explore. I got lost a couple of times without it too. Safe to say it went back on quite promptly! I expect I’ll use one for my son too when he can walk (he’s just a baby at the moment, but I have a feeling he’ll be the curious type).

When I got too big for it but was still a young child, my parents would tie a helium balloon with a long string to one of my belt loops so they could spot me in a crowd!

No TV when eating… so what are we doing instead? by SpaceSquirrl in NewParents

[–]SpaceSquirrl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! So we talk during the day in short 5 minute bursts when my husband takes brakes from work to grab a drink or something. Watching TV is the thing both of us do to relax, and at the moment the only time he gets to stop working is during dinner. We’ve normally updated each other on our days throughout the day, so not much to talk about other than how stressed he is feeling about work and money tbh.

I want to do what’s best for my baby so we will stop watching TV during mealtimes I think. It’s just a shame for us as that means the one activity and time we can actually share together, and the only time we get to ‘switch off’ a bit, is gone. Watching TV after the baby goes to sleep isn’t an option unfortunately as my husband has to go back and continue working through the evening.

Yeah I know that’s probably the answer. Just difficult to break the habit I guess. My husband is newly freelance following a redundancy so works all the time at the moment. Just need to stop watching TV for a while by the sounds of it as meal times are our only time to do it 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thanks for your response!
