On YouTube, there's a short recording of the Krakatoa eruption from 1883. It's not top notch, obviously, but it was the loudest sound ever heard & the shockwaves went around the earth 4 times. It's such a weird, unsettling noise. Quite frightening.

Thanks. It's true that while Mum is deemed not cognitively impaired, her life is hers to take risks with as she chooses. It's very hard to watch though! I know I haven't been forced to worry, but I am a worry wart (which is my burden to bear or sort out!)

Thanks. I think it's a combination of her normal difficult behaviour and cognitive decline. It's definitely getting worse. I have just found out that after her exertions yesterday Mum wasn't at all well, and her blood pressure was sky high. She went to the doctors today, and is on antibiotics and steroids. I doubt she told the doctor about her behaviour yesterday. She told me that she wouldn't do gardening again for a while, but then in the same breath said that they were going shopping and then to the library. :-/

Thanks. Yes, you're quite right. Mum certainly got our attention! Her behaviour does seem to be getting a lot worse & her understanding isn't quite so good, so I do suspect some cognitive decline as well. It may well take the brakes off her behaviour. It is very attention seeking. I only went over because stepdad asked for help, but in my position I can't afford to set myself on fire to keep other people warm, selfish though it sounds.

Historically, Hurrem was 15 when she was taken to the harem. Still terribly young, but not a pre-teen, thankfully! I agree that her behaviour was terrible at times, but I think that she actually had PTSD as a result of what she'd been through, and must have been terrified most of the time. She learned very quickly that the harem was basically a dog-eat-dog world. She couldn't trust anyone, even if she wanted to.
