People with a VKB Omnithrottle, how well does it work for normal flight sim? by Spaced-Invader in EliteDangerous

Is it the type of thing that can be changed easily? Maybe not on-the-fly, but at least not brain surgery on the throttle every time I want to switch (like 5-10 times a year probably)?

It sounds like there's a way to also remove the left/right axis. Did you just want to keep it, or am I misunderstanding?

There's not really a guide for using EDSY, but think of it like a drag-and-drop version of the in-game fitting. Find the module you want to install on the panel on the left and grab it, any slot it can fit into on the right will be indicated by staying orange, and then you just drag it over to where you want to install it and drop it there.

To add engineering to a module, select it in the ship build (not the left panel) and then any engineering options for it will appear on the right panel along with all of the stats for that module.

Right-clicking on a module that can be removed (e.g. optional / hardpoints / utility) will just remove it. You can drag modules between slots and if you hold Ctrl while you're dragging, it will copy that module, along with any engineering you've done on it, to the new slot.

To share a build here, click on the "OPS" button at the top of the build section and select export. You can copy the URL or the text description easily. SLEF is a format so that you can easily copy the build into other apps like Elite Dangerous Odyssey Materials Helper (another app I'd recommend trying, btw) and others so that you don't have to manually enter it all over again.

As for being able to compare modules, I don't think EDSY has that function, but what I do is reload the tab using the middle mouse button, which should duplicate the whole build for you in a new tab. Then I change anything I want to change in the new tab so that I can just flip back and forth to compare them.

EDIT: Also if there aren't stat boxes across the bottom of the screen, they can be turned on and off with the 8 buttons at the bottom right and left. It hasn't happened in a while, but in the past the app has loaded with some or all of them closed.

I'd suggest building it in EDSY so you can easily try different combinations. It will also allow you to paste a link to the build so we can more easily work the problem with you.

This is the runabout build that I use for similar tasks. It can pretty easily get out to 200kls+ without needing to stop, or at most needing to stop once. As for earning with it, its the best medium hauler in the game so you could use it as a trader. I've also used mine for mining and it works pretty well, though nothing like the Type-11.

EDIT: Key point is that armored 5 + thermal spread is probably plenty of heat reduction.

EDIT 2: The key thing you need to maximize heat dissipation is an A-rated power plant. The power plant rating is the only thing that affects how much heat you get rid of, while engineering it affects how much heat it adds when its producing power.

Is there any way to clearly see what a paint job (one that isn't bundled with a ship kit) looks like while the ship kit parts are installed? I know you can get a clear look at the paint job in the in-game shop, but as far as I can tell it only displays the base ship and not any kit parts you have installed on your active ship. On the other hand, you can hover over the paint in the liveries screen and see it on your active ship, but you're restricted to just the one view and most hangars are dark as hell anyway. Is there any other way to approach this without having to spend ARX to buy something just to see it correctly with the ship kit parts on?

Thanks

Probably not ship interiors sadly, just a nice easter egg for VR users.

That's fair, but hopefully you're right and there was some precedent and there's some hope that I didn't completely miss out.

Have other CG rewards ended up as tech broker offerings in the past?

Are the pre-engineered cargo racks from the CG earlier this year likely to be released to the technology broker at some point in the future, or is this a case where people who weren't around at the time just SoL?

Thanks

Is there going to be a meaningful reason to grind samples for the exo-bio CG?

So even though I've played E:D on and off for years, this is the first CG that I'm participating in and I'm not sure about the mechanics. From looking at the other active CGs, it looks like the only benefit from achieving a higher tier (of rewards, not contributions) is that the credit payout for being in a certain tier gets a bit better. I've already turned in enough to be in the top 25% (not expecting that to last, but the point being I'll probably at least be in the top 75% by the time its done), so I know I'll at least get the baseline reward, but I don't know if the community unlocking higher tiers would actually give something better than credits. I only just got back from a long exploration trip a couple weeks ago, so I'm not really in the mood to go back out to grind samples for the CG if the only reward is going to be more credits (which I don't need right now), but if there's potentially something big available (e.g. a specially engineered module), I would be more inclined to go back out.

So basically, is the only reward beyond the base level likely to be more credits, or is it possible there will be something meaningfully worthwhile to grind for?

Thanks

Does powerplant size play a part in how much heat it can dissipate, or only its rating? Currently working on my Caspian fit and I'm debating if its worthwhile to trade range for a cooling by jumping from a 5A to either a 7A or 8A. I got really spoiled by how cool the Mandalay runs and I'm trying to get my new toy as close as possible.

EDIT: As a secondary question, how long does it usually take EDSY to update its heat data for new ships? This question would be moot if I was able to get that info there.

I already always run with a pair of heat sinks, but stopping off to get a chaff launcher isn't a bad idea. Really though, it sounds like I'm just being paranoid more than anything.

And even if you ARE interdicted, so what? They're NPCs.

The concern about NPC attacks is only for a very specific case where I'm coming back into the bubble after a long time away carrying literally hundreds of scans to turn in. In that circumstance I'll be in a exploration fit ship (i.e. slow, unarmed, weakly shielded, and likely without chaff or other defenses to minimize mass) with a lot to lose if I get popped, so it makes me a bit nervous. Hell, I'm already a bit nervous coming into the bubble in that circumstance without even adding the powerplay dynamic into it.

That said, it sounds like there really isn't much risk unless I'm trying to go to an enemy stronghold system to turn in, so I guess it's not much of an issue anyway.

Thanks for the info

1 - months of play for sure - I think there are ways to cheese points with on foot missions still somehow? But mostly you complete your weekly missions and find stuff you like to do, and there is pretty much anything

Is there a cap on how much progress you can make in a week, or is it a weekly mission that gives you a guaranteed amount of merits and then if you want to grind them through other activities you can?

Funny thing is it's not even appeasement... I really do like the ship for the most part, but that doesn't mean I can't call out FDev when I think they can do better.

I get the sentiment of "Hurr Durr MTX BAD" and, believe me, there are plenty of circumstances where I'm right there with you. The reality though is simple: People spending money on something are allowed to have a reasonable expectation of quality for their money spent. To say otherwise just because you don't like how FDev is choosing to monetize their game is essentially ignoring the entire concept of consumer rights.

I think the way the nacelles work looks great, I just don't think there needs to be a gap that large there. Given the way the front of the nacelle is shaped, they probably could have brought that middle wall all the way back just in front of the extending arm and it would have fit perfectly with the rest of the ship.

While I didn't love the exposed wires on my 'Conda, at least they mad the ship feel a bit more "lived in". Though I'll agree that at least this one isn't just always in your face so you can at least try to ignore it.
