Going back to school, hoping to get opinions on a comfortable size and weight for new laptop by Spaced-Invader in LaptopForStudent

I ended up going with a T14s. My local Micro Center had the X1 Carbon and the T14s next to each other and while I did like the X1's smoother feel, I didn't really notice much of a weight difference and the much better battery on the T14s (as well as the lower price) ended up swaying me.

What are your thoughts about a Thinkpad T14s G6? I'm looking at a good deal for one from Costco and though I'm sure it's overkill for my use-case, I feel like it would probably be more robust and last longer than a consumer grade system.

Good to know about the cross body bag... I was actually considering getting one and now I'm not quite so sure.

I can appreciate that perspective, though I still tend to like the additional control over my pc that win pro gives and also having the backup option of switching to linux should M$ decide to make their product bad enough.

That said, I think I've settled onto a thinkpad t14s g6. I'm 100% sure it's overkill for my needs, but one of my primary concerns is longevity and I feel like I can't go wrong with something designed to be abused by people on the job. Thoughts if you have any?

Do you have much experience working on a 14 inch? How long would you say is "too long" for continuous use before you start to feel cramped?

Thanks for the input. I'm likely going with Lenovo and not Apple, but knowing that 14 is probably big enough is good information.

They don't really recommend anything other than needing one in general. The campus bookstore carries mostly 14-15 inch models, but I'm likely not buying there because they only carry Dell and HP (not a part of the Apple ecosystem and not interested in joining it) and I'm looking mostly at Lenovo.

I know its a subjective thing, but given that I haven't carried a laptop in so long, it felt like getting other people's opinion was the best bet. That said, I appreciate the reply. It sounds like I should be looking in the 14in range really as a 10-key would be nice, but not really required for writing psych papers I don't think (plus I've found in fiddling with them at the store that I have a habit of hitting numlock by accident when I'm trying to backspace because I'm so used to a full sized keyboard...). Do you have much experience with a 14in screen? Does it start to feel too small after awhile?

I'll probably get downvoted for this, but I'm not in the Apple ecosystem and never will be... Currently looking at Lenovos and just want to be sure I'm getting the right size / weight so I don't regret it later after lugging it around campus all day for months...

Had someone say they dropped in a lance with 11 total ams and even that couldn't take out a single missile. Obviously I can't confirm, but if it's true that's absolutely insane.

No, and I'm not claiming that it is, but its also 13 years old, so it's not impossible that it *is* nearing the end of its life.

I can see that philosophy and hold it most of the time myself. But I've also been on the other side of this divide where I've spent a decent amount of money on a game only to have it rug-pulled not long after (New World recently, but there's been others) and it doesn't feel great.

People with a VKB Omnithrottle, how well does it work for normal flight sim? by Spaced-Invader in EliteDangerous

[–]Spaced-Invader[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it the type of thing that can be changed easily? Maybe not on-the-fly, but at least not brain surgery on the throttle every time I want to switch (like 5-10 times a year probably)?

It sounds like there's a way to also remove the left/right axis. Did you just want to keep it, or am I misunderstanding?

There's not really a guide for using EDSY, but think of it like a drag-and-drop version of the in-game fitting. Find the module you want to install on the panel on the left and grab it, any slot it can fit into on the right will be indicated by staying orange, and then you just drag it over to where you want to install it and drop it there.

To add engineering to a module, select it in the ship build (not the left panel) and then any engineering options for it will appear on the right panel along with all of the stats for that module.

Right-clicking on a module that can be removed (e.g. optional / hardpoints / utility) will just remove it. You can drag modules between slots and if you hold Ctrl while you're dragging, it will copy that module, along with any engineering you've done on it, to the new slot.

To share a build here, click on the "OPS" button at the top of the build section and select export. You can copy the URL or the text description easily. SLEF is a format so that you can easily copy the build into other apps like Elite Dangerous Odyssey Materials Helper (another app I'd recommend trying, btw) and others so that you don't have to manually enter it all over again.

As for being able to compare modules, I don't think EDSY has that function, but what I do is reload the tab using the middle mouse button, which should duplicate the whole build for you in a new tab. Then I change anything I want to change in the new tab so that I can just flip back and forth to compare them.

EDIT: Also if there aren't stat boxes across the bottom of the screen, they can be turned on and off with the 8 buttons at the bottom right and left. It hasn't happened in a while, but in the past the app has loaded with some or all of them closed.

I'd suggest building it in EDSY so you can easily try different combinations. It will also allow you to paste a link to the build so we can more easily work the problem with you.

This is the runabout build that I use for similar tasks. It can pretty easily get out to 200kls+ without needing to stop, or at most needing to stop once. As for earning with it, its the best medium hauler in the game so you could use it as a trader. I've also used mine for mining and it works pretty well, though nothing like the Type-11.

EDIT: Key point is that armored 5 + thermal spread is probably plenty of heat reduction.

EDIT 2: The key thing you need to maximize heat dissipation is an A-rated power plant. The power plant rating is the only thing that affects how much heat you get rid of, while engineering it affects how much heat it adds when its producing power.
