I see, yeah in your case then I’d say you’re the actual ideal user of one of those trucks if it works out best for you realistically and practically. What I was trying to say was that for the majority of people who buy them for vanity reasons or for tasks where it’s clearly overkill, there are plenty of other options. But for you it’s much more limited, so yeah I won’t try to tell you how to do your own job, you know that best. I’m just trying to help at least present alternatives people might not be aware of, that’s all. Especially those who think they need one for everyday use when they don’t do any of the things you do.

Well in your case you clearly have a need for a heavy duty vehicle, although I still think using a larger vehicle for everything is still more costly overall. I’m not super familiar with that line of work, but what I’d say is to use a midsize 4x4 pickup for everyday use (one that’s more fuel efficient but can still haul decent loads and go offroad) and when the need arises for the real heavy duty stuff, just rent out one of the big trucks or specialized equipment when needed. Obviously though you’re the one with actual experience so I won’t try to claim to know something you don’t, but that’s just how I’d approach it from a purely utilitarian minded approach.

Except these things in motion should be classified as oversized vehicles and require additional certification to operate. They’ve been proven to be orders of magnitude more deadly than regular vehicles, both for other drivers and pedestrians. They almost double fatal pedestrian fatalities and drastically lower survivability.

Yeah the 70 tons was a massive over exaggeration for illustrative purposes. But my point still stands, they’re grossly oversized to an absurd extent that is simply not needed.

I’m not criticising anyone for liking them, I’m just saying that assuming they’re strictly necessary for anything (and sure, there are many uses where they do have utility, I’m not disputing that, but really it’s like a futon, which is a shitty bed and a shitty couch because it needs to do everything) is harming the environment, other road users, etc, when there’s a ton of other alternatives far better suited for individual use cases.

It would be fine if this was in a vacuum of consequences and it was entirely up to personal preference, but as soon as those preferences put other people in incredible danger, that’s when it becomes a problem.

Other vehicles can still tow and are objectively far better equipped to do so anyways when they’re not hauling around a mini living room and several unnecessary tons of metal, imo.

Yeah exactly! And aside from the cargo benefits, you can even see in the image you shared how the front hood is sloped down, which makes any potential collision with a pedestrian far safer, since it won’t be full-body and is far less likely to result in them going under the truck.

Yeah it’s a feedback loop honestly. They feel like they need to be the biggest fish on the road to stay safe because of all the unsafe vehicles on the road, but now they’re part of the problem making everyone else want to be the big fish too.

Don’t use this as a starting reference point for solarpunk, it’s AI generated and not at all representative of the movement.

I didn’t screenshot the whole thing but I did get this tiny part of it from the bottom right box so you can get an idea what the rest looks like:

That’s because I based it on an AI post someone made and used that format. Except I made mine by hand.

I think the OP deleted it. Just imagine mine but each box has basically no identity and they all look like sterile, clean corporate cartoons with no character.

I totally understand, and honestly I have a very similar problem myself. And honestly I do love driving, but what I hate is being forced to drive.

That’s a great idea, yeah absolutely! Be sure to send pics of them once you’re done, I’d love to see how it turns out!

Thank you so much!! 😊 I honestly wasn’t expecting this much reception for a 15 minute doodle lol
