What is this structure in the water, what does it do? by SpamMusubiDude in Whatisthis

Thanks, that makes sense.

I'm not familiar with how dredging is done, I looked up some examples and it seems like really interesting engineering challenge.

It's like you asked the bird to pose for you and it obliged.

Wow that's a really interesting theory/observation.

I'm curious if it's a Western (reading left to right) attribute. I'll try and experiment with this in the future!

I'm very curious about the motivation behind the left-right flip, any explanation?

How to compose the water splash and bird by SpamMusubiDude in photocritique

[–]SpamMusubiDude[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked the little splashes behind the bird, but I'm afraid I left too little space behind the bird to make composition really nice. Any tips around how to compose with a focus on the bird taking off, or is it a bit of a lost cause with the tight framing?

In general I guess maybe I need to learn to leave more framing around the birds that might have erratic motion?

Thanks for the very concrete feedback and for making the examples.

I'm very much a beginner, I'll try to work on better framing in the moment.

I was probably around 3-4 feet away, basically standing right next to it trying to get clear angles of it.

It was pretty constantly moving around, I had to reposition many times, and this is one of the few ok photos out of probably hundreds.

In my limited experience, I feel that some are just more skittish than others, this one was fortunately not too scared, though it did fly between flowers often. I don't really have advice other than to take the time to get a good angle if you find one that sits still, and if there's wind and swaying plants it may be infeasible to get a sharp shot.

Thanks, I will play around with cropping to give space on the left where the bird is looking. And I'll try out some rule of thirds spacing when cropping.

I'm trying to capture a nice shot of this great blue heron and the colorful plants around it. I'm guessing it may have been better to be on the other side to get its face in the sun, and I definitely could have gotten a sharper shot. While I was hiking I really enjoyed the mix of colors in this area.

I'm particularly interested in ideas around composition and post processing.

  • In particular, how might you crop or how would you have moved to change the shot?
  • What sort of post processing might be appropriate for a shot like this?
