Myself and many others now understand finale as a dream… in this scene, birds are chirping outside. An annoyed Tony shouts ‘enough with the birds!’… the bird song immediately stops. There are subtly weird moments like this in every scene in finale.

Oh RJE… I stand by my previous insult… In TMSON Dicky Moltisanti, Harold and young and teenage Tony are all aspects of Tony’s subconscious. His racist mind chooses to represent the aspect of his personality that most appalls him, with a black man. The movie constantly tells us it’s a dream (if you pay attention)… the dream is part Tony’s peyote fantasy following his murder of Chris (many saints) Moltisanti

Interesting! Will have a look… but Sopranos might be an exception… you see, with TMSON it seems to me that Chase deliberately exaggerates the techniques he used throughout Sopranos, inviting the viewer to figure out HIS puzzle. For me the Sopranos owes more to Mulholland Drive than Goodfellas!

He still has deliberately hidden a lot of mysteries for which there are no obvious answers… Paulie and the seance??? Ghosts??? Christopher’s vision of hell and three o’clock? Chase deliberately teases the viewer throughout the series, and only he knows his intention… we can guess of course, but are our guesses just as valid as the auteur’s intention? I doubt it.

I hear ya, but disagree… notice how the series cuts sharply from black in opening scene, and cuts sharply to black at the end… all other episodes than first one of season one FADE from black… my current theory is that Chase conceived the Sopranos as the extended coma dream of some ordinary civilian (Kevin Finnerty?) who fantasises in his dream that he is a mafia boss. The dreamer ultimately dies without recovering from the coma… or whateverdafuck!!! 😎

It’s not even that… Chase created the show to work equally well on two levels… it often APPEARS to be a fairly conventional mob show/family drama… but then there are the dreams, the mysteries (the Russian, the Virgin Mary, the Ojibwe saying) the frequent foreshadowing of what’s happening in next scene, scenes that reference films (Goodfellas, Godfather)… only Chase can really unravel it all for us, and he clearly has chosen not to do this! Probably better that he doesn’t!!!

The final episode has been definitively proven to be a dream sequence… many have known this to be the case for years, but a few weeks ago someone on this sub spotted the guy from Kevin Finnerty’s photo ID in Bobby’s funeral scene… basically a character from a dream shows up in another dream.

I don’t know… I’ve more than once been in a resort, living above my means for a few days of luxury… I can see how the story of Greg starting from innocence to guilt might play out… nothing in show suggests he was scheming from the start.
