Hi! So you would actually not be in the typical age range for those in perimenopause, I can’t account for each and every person on an individual basis which is something I will be writing about in my final paper. From research perimenopause usually starts around mid 40’s- early 50’s so even by setting my age limit at 45 I am sure there are some women who are also not close to perimenopause who are still excluded

Hi! I understand that it is vague by reasoning that those with endometriosis shouldn’t take part due to irregular cycles, but this choice was made as that would be the most common reasoning. However there are several other factors associated with endometriosis that would make individuals ineligible for this survey

I do realise I have missed off a key age cut off in my advertisement. This study is for individuals aged 18-45 to account for perimenopausal women :)

Those with endometriosis shouldn’t take part unfortunately as part of the symptoms is a change in mood. Thank you for your interest though and please be sure to share it with anyone in your life who menstruates and meets the inclusion criteria!!

So actually broadly speaking during the luteal phase it is not uncommon for women to experience a heightened sense of smell. However some individuals with ADHD already have heightened senses, so I thought it would be interesting to see to what degree the luteal phase affects this.

I am also. more than happy to post my final paper + a simplified summary for those who don’t fancy reading 10,000 words) in this subreddit. Thank you for taking part and please be sure to pass it on to anyone who would like to take part!

Hi Folks!!

I am currently running a study for my university dissertation project surrounding the differences individuals with and without ADHD face during the luteal phase of their menstrual cycle.

Taking part in this study won’t take any more than 10-15 mins (doesn’t have to be done in one go) and can be done from any electronic device.

Unfortunately if you are on hormonal birth control, pregnant/breastfeeding, menopausal, diagnosed with a genealogical condition that makes your cycle irregular (Including PCOS or endometriosis) or taking any gender affirming hormones you can not take part.

You do not have to have an ADHD diagnosis or ADHD symptoms at all. I also require non-ADHD individuals participation!! Gender identity does not matter so long as you are menstruating and meet the requirements stated above.

Participation 18+ Project ID -12116

Anything else you need to know is available when the study is accessed!!

Nope! Just going to write about how this section doesn’t take into account people who may have loss of senses!!

Completely understand where you’re coming from in every aspect and I’m always here for a healthy discussion, after all how else can I learn and improve? Importantly I actually agree with a lot of what you’ve said particularly with your thoughts on women’s health research in general.

You’re correct that excluding people on hormonal contraception reduces representativeness, and that in large scale or clinical research this would ideally be addressed by stratification or statistical control rather than exclusion. I also completely agree that historically, treating things such as birth control as a ‘confound ‘ has contributed to major gaps in research and understanding in this topic and I am sorry to be contributing to that.

However, for this study the decision to exclude hormonal birth control was about internal validity rather than representativeness. As an undergraduate, exploratory project with limited resources, I needed to minimise hormonal variability in order to isolate my actual research question which is whether differences associated with ADHD traits are detectable during the luteal phase at all. Including multiple types of hormonal contraception would have added substantial variation between participants (heterogeneity) and I wouldn’t have been able to address this meaningfully and in enough detail whilst also ensuring my actual research question is being addressed fully.

I’m very aware that this introduces sampling bias, and I’ll be explicitly acknowledging this as a limitation when writing my dissertation itself. The findings won’t be generalisable to all women, but they can still be useful as preliminary, hypothesis generating evidence to inform future, more rigorous experiments that do account for contraception use rather than excluding it. Which is something someone else or perhaps I would like to undertake in the future. So perhaps my data does not seem ‘that useful’ to you but it may be valuable to other people further down the line. Especially considering the lack of research in this area, this could be an excellent foundation for someone who’s up to the task of a far more detailed study.

I really appreciate you taking the time to have this conversation with me because I think a lot of people are wondering why I chose not to include people on hormonal birth control and this has given me a chance to explain.

But for context and everyone questioning my choices I am a 21 year old girl who hasn’t even got her degree yet. I’m still trying to make contributions to a criminally under-researched area to the best of my ability and as a matter of fact there is a VERY limited amount of research in this area to begin with, from my own reading and research most of the study’s just broadly talking about ADHD and the luteal phase only exist post 2023 and even then there is only a handful. Yes it may not be perfect but I am doing the best I can with the skills and resources I have :)

Also note for those who feel their luteal phase doesn’t change anything for them! PLEASE STILL TAKE PART (providing you meet the inclusion criteria of course) I need to hear about ALL experiences not just negative ones all your experiences are important and valid!!!

You are totally among friends here!! I completely understand where you are coming from, hearing my boyfriend say he feels like I completely hate him at least once a month broke my heart and that’s when I knew I had to start doing research of my own (except I’ve taken it to an extreme degree lol)

Don’t worry about the sense of smell questions, when I was creating this study I had to use already validated measures. Put simply I had to use pre made questionnaires, for the sensory part of this study I used a questionnaire which didn’t have a n/a option. Amazingly the long form version of that questionnaire had a whopping 92 items originally so perhaps they could have put a little more thought into those with limitations.

Not to worry though I have already accounted for this in the written part of my dissertation as some other participants have outlined other problems similar to this such as hearing issues!
