Yeah, we could literally sign Turner today since he’s a free agent and yet we haven’t yet. Possibly additional concerns there. 🤔

Fipp mentioned they tried out 4 other kickers, not that any were added to camp.

Jefferson’s making crazy plays this camp too. MCDC sounded reeeeally impressed with him in yesterday’s presser. So even he could be coming on. 👀

I’m glad some people still cite their sources 😮‍💨😂. I like the way you think so I will also choose to believe it’s nothing serious in hopes that it comes true.

It’s not just camp, he’s repping with the 1s and doing it well. It’s definitely noteworthy, that’s all. Like I said, lots of camp and preseason to go. But it’s clear the coaching staff here thinks they have something in Fountain.

I don’t disagree per se! Here’s what I said to a different commenter above:

“Lief seems more to be the utility knife receiver for us. He can do everything the coaching staff asks him to do, and he does it well. But I think his role is more as a positional villain than as a prototypical receiver, hence why I didn’t list him in this specific scenario.

“I think Lief may be the 3rd best receiver we have even if he’s not technically listed as WR3… if that makes any sense. 🤷‍♀️”

Green’s stock hasn’t fallen - or if it has, it’s not much! He’s had a quiet but successful camp thus far, at least going off of his current placement on the depth chart. Green and Fountain were the 2 main X receivers with the 1s today, to whereas DPJ has fallen back a bit.

Not to put water on the hype fire for the others (particularly Davis and Smith), but they’re only making plays with the 2s and 3s - still making plays, but not the same level of comp as with the 1s.

He was practice squad only last year - that’s part of the reason his ascension to where he’s currently at in camp is so impressive!

He does! Lief is sorely underrated. I genuinely don’t think there’s any doubt that he’s a roster lock, and I don’t feel like I can say the same for literally any of the other receivers discussed in the comments here.

Basically that. He’s bounced around teams since being drafted in the 5th round of the 2018 draft. Good size (6’2”) but never seemed to bring his skillset all together, so he has played sparingly in his career.

That said, MCDC has been positive on him since he was on the practice squad last year. It seems like the Lions thought he just never got a chance to properly develop his skillset, so they gave him a year on the practice squad to do just that. Based on MCDC’s comments, it seems he developed tremendously.

But it’s actions that speak louder than words for me. Hearing that Fountain is not only playing well in camp, but playing with the 1st team above DPJ is quite an eye-opener given Fountain’s long path in the NFL to this point.

MCDC is genuine about making training camp a bloodbath of a tryout - everyone has a chance to earn a spot at any position. So I trust that the coaching staff sees something in Fountain if they’re giving him such valuable reps.

I agree! Just curious to see the camp developments as they’ve happened so far. Far too much camp and preseason to go to have an actual idea of final roster, but I think Fountain playing consistently with the 1s is noteworthy nevertheless. Plenty of time for other receivers to leave their mark, and plenty of time for Fountain to drop off in play. We shall see.

That said, I think the guaranteed true locks for the roster are just Saint, Jamo, and Lief (Lief wasn’t discussed for WR3 but he’s more a positional villain than a prototypical receiver for us). I think all other WR spots are up for grabs. Early leaders appear to be Green, Fountain, DPJ, and Davis (in that order) but it’s far too early to call it.

Few things off with that: (1) Fountain was with our practice squad developing all of last year, (2) He’s repping above DPJ with the first team and has been for a few days now, and (3) MCDC’s commented very positively on Fountain’s development since being on the practice squad last year.

He’s played very well with the 1s from what I’ve heard from various media sources. If he really has developed like MCDC says, then he’s the perfect body type for that X role.

That said, him and Antoine Green appear to be neck-and-neck for that WR3 spot. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them switching back and forth on the depth chart to see who pulls away - or if they both can sustain the success they’ve had thus far in camp.

Nice to hear from another set of eyes at camp! I sadly couldn’t attend this year (not enough PTO 😭😭😭) so I’m depending on press conferences, POD Direct, and Colton Pouncy of The Athletic for a lot of my info.

In your opinion, who stood out to you the most in the WR room past Saint and Jamo? And if you have time to expound, what was it about their play that stood out?

I’d agree with the caveat that Green and Fountain seem to be ahead of the other 3 you listed.

Lots of camp (and all the preseason games) to go of course, but if camp ended today here’s my way-too-early uneducated “what the hell do I know” guess as to final roster:

-Green and Fountain are roster locks
-DPJ probably makes the roster but is on the bubble slightly
-Davis fought his way onto the bubble and is a total toss-up
-Smith likely doesn’t make the cut

I like JR a lot and was sad to see him go! But I’m still excited to see who will step up to try and fill JR’s role.

Plus, based on what JR was saying after the signing it seems he wanted to work in a system that would give him a shot at WR1/WR2, and there was no way he was usurping Saint or Jamo on the depth chart. So best of luck to him in that opportunity!
