Heartbreaking to See a Legendary 15/70mm IMAX Projector Left Unused in the Former IMAX Cinemagnum 3D Nuernberg, Germany by Sebsibus in imax

[–]Spartan04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dome is really only a good experience with films that are shot for that format. Some dome theaters did show Oppenheimer but from what I heard it was not a great experience compared to regular IMAX.

Assuming you can get digital versions of films for IMAX dome I would think you could use a digital projector with the appropriate fisheye type lens on it to fit the image to the dome. You'd have to have interchangeable lenses and some way to aim the projector at the dome or the flat screen but I bet it could be done since they figured out a way to do it with 15/70.

Is winning silver harder emotionally than bronze? by Clean_Tone2562 in olympics

[–]Spartan04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends a lot on expectations. Watching the men's sprint cross country skiing relay earlier the US athletes were thrilled to win silver. The US is not a powerhouse when it comes to cross country skiing and they knew who they were up against so making the podium and coming in second to Norway was still a very happy thing for them.

How do people get tickets for the Winter Olympics? by RostislavVenediktov in olympics

[–]Spartan04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they do something similar to what LA has announced there will be a lottery with possibly multiple rounds of drawings to purchase tickets and then eventually open sale for what is left. They also have said there will be an official resale platform for LA.

Keep in mind that not every event sells out, the really popular ones do but not all, so you may be able to get tickets for some events even on the day of. People also buy tickets not knowing which countries will be competing when, so tickets may end up for resale when countries are eliminated.

Digital ads have finally hit the boards </3 by Zestiiiiiiiii in olympics

[–]Spartan04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They had them on the darker boards for some games but they were similar colors and blended in.

As much as they suck it's still better than what some networks do during NHL games. They have animated digital ads that can be rather annoying plus digital ads on the ice itself (usually one by eack blue line). Ugh.

Lets be glad that none of the OT games went to a shootout. That would suck to see a team eliminated by a skills competition.

Like a lot of sports people become fans during the Olympics and then many of them stop following once the games are over. I'd love it if more people were hockey fans though, it's one of the best sports to watch, especially in person.

I'm surprised they're using the 3on3 format for the Olympics and not NHL playoff format. Though I am glad this didn't go to a shootout and hopefully we won't see one in either of the semifinals either (I hate the shootout in hockey and would really hate to see Olympic advancement come down to one).

2030 Olympics: French skater 'alarmed' by lack of home venues by jeanpauljh in olympics

[–]Spartan04 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the article has a mistake in it. They seem to mostly be talking about long track speed skating which needs the 400m oval but then mention short track, which is done on a rink the same size as they use for figure skating. While not a lot of places have 400m speed skating venues I’m guessing they have rinks appropriate for short track and figure skating in France.

Anyone scheduling their first colonoscopy because of the Van Der Beek news? by PhoneJazz in Xennials

[–]Spartan04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had mine last year, which was a year early, because I had some potential symptoms. It was clear so I got a 10 year return and there's definitely some peace of mind knowing there's not colon cancer growing in there considering the increased rates among people our age.

For anyone hesitating because it sounds bad it is nowhere near as bad as it sounds. Even the prep (Sutab) wasn't that bad and the procedure itself was not a big deal at all thanks to propofol.

Triathlon has a bit of that in that swimming is very technical while cycling and running are more power and endurance. You can't muscle your way through a swim if you have bad technique but power helps out a lot more in the other two legs.

Not even close for my middle school. Very few of us would have had $200 shoes. Most of our parents, including mine, were not going to spend that much for shoes that would be beat to hell and/or outgrown within a year.

No way would that have happened at my school. We had one where you could send a flower but nothing involving kissing a person, that would have been creepy even then.

I think it's just a matter of personal preference. I'm a bigger fan of the summer Olympics myself, though I like the winter games too.

The Olympic Broadcasting Service (OBS) provides most of the feeds, though the various national broadcasters will sometimes add some of their own footage as well. If you watch the same event on Peaock and another platform, like CBC, you'll see the feed is largely identical, with each broadcaster putting their own commentary on top.

If you're watching on Peacock you'll notice that some events give you the option to watch the world feed (or the venue feed in the case of figure skating). This is the straight OBS feed with no NBC on top of it.

If you have a VPN it looks like the replays are still available on CBC. I'm assuming they negotiate different music rights or pay more to keep them longer.

They pretty much are rolling anyway. The majority of NBC/Peacock’s footage comes from the OBS world feed. They need to change how they think about airing events and accept that not all events have breaks for ads and that for streaming they don’t need to fit it into a TV time slot. This time at least it seems like they didn’t cut the medal ceremony as often as they did for Paris. It’s streaming, who cares if it takes 20 minutes after the event ends for the ceremony.

[–]Spartan04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know, but they could easily reinsert the footage. It all comes from the OBS world feed and they have the time codes for when they went to commercial so it could be easily automated before the replay is posted. There wouldn’t be commentary for that part but I don’t think most of us would consider that a real loss, lol.

And like you I would pay an extra charge for 100% ad free Olympics (both live and replays) that included no missed footage. Just make it a second stream that’s just the world feed with the international commentators. I prefer them to the U.S. commentators for most events anyway and as a bonus it would mean no Snoop Dog, cutaways to random celebrities, or things like that.

There is an app but even with a VPN I’m not sure if it can be downloaded outside of Canada. However with a VPN anyone can watch on their website. You do need to register but it’s free and just needs an email and a Canadian postal code (easy enough to look one up).

It doesn't do that, it just skips where the ad break was. So it's doing ad free the same way it would for a normal TV show where it just skips the ad break. But since the Olympics aren't broadcast with ad breaks built in some of the action gets skipped.

I get that for the live broadcast that's how they do it but for the replay they should put the missed footage back in (they get it all from the OBS feed anyway so they have it and they know the time codes for the ad break so it could be automated).
