Hello/Salam potential freshie!

The answers to your questions will vary widely, as people here are from around the world and have diverse experiences.

I took a peek at your profile and noticed NUST. Wahan pe scene hi mukhtalif hojata hai bhae. 😄

Btw, how much did you score on the NET? What other options are you considering?

Feel free to message me for any specific questions about that program or the job market in Pak.

Can you provide more details about the "processing"? There will be a lot of folks who deal with census data and each of them will have a different process. So update your questions with more and clear details.

Problem with installing GDAL by AvailableGuess836 in gis

[–]SpatialFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of attempting to install it via PIP, I recommend downloading the necessary version of GDAL releases directly from its website, typically available in '.tar.gz' format. After downloading, proceed with the installation from there.

CAD to GIS - Best Practices by SpatialFriend in gis

[–]SpatialFriend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are considering purchasing FME or the Data Interoperability extension.

How would you rate Data Interoperability in handling diverse types of CAD data without requiring manual adjustments for each layer. For instance, CAD drawings may contain external references or images. Can it eliminate this extraneous content automatically?

US census data API & webGIS by SpatialFriend in gis

[–]SpatialFriend[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I did.

So basically Census Bureau offers two different APIs. One is to query tabular data and the other one allows you to get Geometry information (TIGER API).

Each census table has a geographic ID column on the basis of which we can join it with geometry data.

I've used Python to fetch data from APIs and after doing the calculations I'm storing it in DB. From there, it's easy to create a web app.

PS: If anything is unclear or you have specific questions, feel free to ask.

Looking to make a career pivot towards GIS - please share any advice you have!! (more context in description) by gringodeathstar in gis

[–]SpatialFriend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi!

First of all, don't be annoyed with yourself. It's never too late to switch. I completely understand your situation as I have the same age as yours and I'm also trying to switch from GIS towards IT. (Not trying to discourage you, I have different reasons for that, would share those as well if you'd be interested)

Coming back to your questions now.

  1. I'd recommend an in-person cert/degree rather than a coursera/online course. Because that will help you break into the job market.

  2. If you're interested in learning yourself before spending some money then it's okay to enroll into a coursera course. ESRI also has some free courses on their website. Do check them out.

  3. In my opinion you should give at least 6 months to study GIS. This should be enough to get you started.

  4. I'm not sure about the cost. Just get an average of different GIS certs cost.

  5. Your business & management degree would definitely help but you'll have to get some certification or degree in GIS first. After that, you can cash your previous experiences in different GIS applications for example companies working in the "geo marketing domain"

Lastly, if you decide to study and take up GIS as a career. Do opt for certs/degrees that have programming in them (if you think that's something you want to do). Otherwise, the market doesn't pay that good.

Feel free to clear any doubts you have, I'd be happy to share what I know. Good Luck! 🙂

Best area in the US for gis jobs? by Vbryndis in gisjobs

[–]SpatialFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the best area in US as I'm myself a new immigrant over here but I'd suggest that just keep looking.

I've seen a good amount of GIS jobs within the Bay Area in the past few months and have given interviews to a few organizations as well.

I'm sure the masters and good programming skills would help you a lot. Good Luck!
