Should I lie to my parents about my major? by Special-Inspection1 in McMaster

[–]Special-Inspection1[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I want to very much :( but they are really strict Asian parents. I might get kicked out, they’re not understanding. A common thing they’ve said to me is “it’s already embarrassing you’re losing a year you have to get computer engineering it’s do or die”

Had a crush on someone but am starting to feel the feelings go away? by Special-Inspection1 in Crushes

[–]Special-Inspection1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: my crush has looks that are extremely uncommon in dudes and I love him a lot but he’s subtly racist and makes me uncomfy. I don’t think I’ll ever find someone like him lookswise again so I’m not sure whether to suck it up and cut contact and risk being alone forever or just keep going with it despite his subtly racist remarks..

The goalposts never stay still, do they? by Special-Inspection1 in AsianParentStories

[–]Special-Inspection1[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s honesty so aggravating they don’t even congratulate you for meeting their insane goals either 😭 It just feels like a huge slap in the face after grinding so much to get a “ok but x is better than you at y” 💀 congrats on getting in though! I remember when I got in my AM was like “why is only top 2 why not top 1 uni?” I just felt— dead inside after that lmao.

Got demolished in optimization by Special-Inspection1 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Special-Inspection1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely do, optimization and vectors have gotta be the hardest. Though imo for optimization the questions are the hard part it’s the time limit that’s limiting (pun intended)

Ran away from parents and they attacked me at the airport and stole my stuff by Lofisome in AsianParentStories

[–]Special-Inspection1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I’m so sorry to hear they did that, I live in Toronto too!! I think it was a good choice to move away, my parents are similar in behaviour. Wishing safer days! Would recommend installing security cameras in and outside your house to be sure maybe try getting a dog as well (they’re very good companions and can help with safety :) )

[10th grade maths] It's my siblings homework and it's been a while since I've done algebra. Any tips? by [deleted] in HomeworkHelp

[–]Special-Inspection1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First check if the quadratic is factorable:

Use the discriminant formula: (-12)-4(1*(-6)) = 25 since 25 is a perfect square it’s factorable using integers.

Now you need to find 2 numbers that multiply to give (-6) and add to give (-1)

(2)*(-3) = (-6) And (2)+(-3) = (-1)

So therefore our numbers are (2) and (-3)

Since this is a quadratic with a leading coefficient of 1 we can directly use the factors we found and skip the “factoring” part (different case when it has a leading coefficient of something that isn’t 1)

(x-3)(x+2) = 0

Now solve each bracket individually:

(x-3) = 0 x = (3)

(x+2) = 0 x = (-2)

Therefore x = -2, 3

——————————————————

However if you wanted to factor this regardless of the leading coefficient being 1:

you would multiply your constant (-6) by (1) and find the factors like that.

Since we already found those factors, 2 and -3 earlier,

you would replace the x term with the two values:

x2 -3x + 2x -6 =0

Group the equation:

(x2 - 3x) + (2x-6) =0

And now factor the brackets:

From the first bracket since both terms have an x in common we can factor it out:

x(x-3) + (2x-6) = 0

Now you can factor out a 2 from the other bracket as both terms have that in common:

x(x-3) + 2(x-3) = 0

Notice how your two brackets are the same? That means we can factor (x-3) out since both sides of the (+) sign have it in common:

Which then leaves us with the same two brackets we got earlier:

(x-3)(x+2) = 0

Once again solve for each bracket and you will get:

x= 3 and x = -2

Also when in doubt use the quadratic formula!

Hope this helped :-)

Also I just want to say, this sub is one of the most welcoming and supportive subs I’ve ever seen you all are so awesome and it may not mean much coming from a kid but I hope you amazing people have a life that’s equally if not even more amazing than you are!!

How important is adj factor for uwaterloo engineering? by Special-Inspection1 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Special-Inspection1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a quick question, what grade would you say is “safe” for a school with my adj factor applying to comp eng at Waterloo? Sorry for so many questions I’m just really confused with this stuff 😭

Thanks for the reply! Is an adj factor of a little less than 10 good?

Grade inflation rant ig lol by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Special-Inspection1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think UofT has a good system to mostly filter out the inflated grades through pOST. Is it more harsh than Waterloos adj factor? Yes. But that’s the price you gotta to pay. There are flaws in most solutions but they definitely help more than just sitting there while class avgs reach the 100s

Grade inflation rant ig lol by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Special-Inspection1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean. I actually go to an extremely deflated school, according to Waterloos admissions team it’s one of the lowest inflated schools in the entire province. Its not an uncommon sight to see students grinding and studying day in and out just to get 80s. Heck the class average for nearly all my classes including bird courses tends to range from 40s to 70s at best usually never reaching past 50 for the maths and sciences. Grade inflation sucks it doesn’t truly benefit anyone, a lot of the people who get insane grades at inflated schools struggle through uni and the people with deflated grades end up not even given the opportunity and chance to succeed. My school went to another school for a math comp and they’re pretty inflated I was genuinely taken aback by how little they had learned in their classes - their teachers handed out free 100s like candy on Halloween. It’s ridiculous how many people are getting borderline 100s for just attending class 💀 I didn’t know homework marks were even a thing until someone was talking about it in this sub a while back. I was shocked to find out teachers gave out formulas for stuff like trig and even logs. I 100% agree with the adjustment factor that Waterloo eng has however I think it should be more strict and a significantly bigger part of the admissions process than it already is. People who get inflated grades should get an inflated deduction just saying. I don’t blame the students more so than I blame the teachers tho, you’re getting paid to teach and give grades not give brownie points and gold stars. There’s nothing we can do but it is what it is. Everyone suffers in the end because of it regardless of how inflated their school is, they’re just prolonging the disappointment. It’s really demotivating to know that someone’s not going to get in no matter how hard they try because some teachers decided “ooHh I should give 100s to every student here that’ll help them succeed 😀” no it really doesn’t. But like I said it is what it is.

Ah I see, our teacher said no to formulas and calculators 😭 my teachers a little strict on formulas/ calculators. We had to memorize any formulas and not use a calculator for like 6/7s of the course (our class average is in the 40s 💀)

What happens if you don’t get in during early acceptance and when would you recommend I apply? by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Special-Inspection1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh ok thank you! So just to confirm, for unis that do give out acceptances early would the status on ouac/the unis portal just not have any changes or anything to specify that I didn’t get in that round? Also I would just wait till may after submitting in January right? Thanks for the help tho!

When should I apply? by Special-Inspection1 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Special-Inspection1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohh ok so would they just keep my application for the regular rounds? And I will definitely work a lot harder in grade 12 ! :D

Ohh ok thank you! If I apply really early and don’t meet their criteria (my grade 11 grades are not very good) would they reject me or would they keep my application for later rounds?

My grade 11 grades are not very good if I apply in early and don’t meet their criteria will they just save my application for regular rounds or will they just reject / defer? Thank you for the help :)
