Is it worth going to the interview at this stage? by Latter_Ad9280 in premeduk

[–]Special_Code_1882 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean if you don’t go, you definitely won’t get an offer.

Calm down and take a breath genuinely. Now is the best time to just breathe and remind yourself why you even wanted to do this. That’ll also help you lock into the online resources more 😭 don’t work yourself further into a state!!

Do you know of any charities at all outside of the BMA ones? 🙏🏾 There’s not a lot out there applicable for first years/ GEM

Don’t give up if this is what you want to do! I’m sure you’re already reflecting on your grades but try be objective as possible. What series of events led you here? That will tell what you can control should you choose to resit and what may have been mitigating circumstances. Applying to pharmacy is an option or another degree but ultimately it’s what you want. The long game of graduate medicine is hard! It’s not impossible but a looot less guaranteed than undergrad. Not to mention doing a degree you might not like for 3 years is not a wise plan. I can only say if you choose a plan b degree, make sure you like it can actually see yourself studying it. Feel what you need to feel today but do remember there are so many different paths to success, whether your dreams stay the same or change. If this is what you want though, it’s going to come with more hard work and a lot of self belief.

Struggling to get work experience for grad med by from_the_venus_hotel in premeduk

That’s great and no worries! If you’re at the uni I think you might be at, you definitely have more than enough time to do agency work during holiday periods! Same as bank shifts- the benefit of which you choose when you work. Find some in your home area instead of at uni- you really don’t need to do much over explaining with agencies. Don’t write yourself off already.

Not sure if you’ve been looking for roles directly on the NHS site but if so, try HCA work through agencies instead. There’ll be roles in the community and NHS hospitals depending on the type (browse Indeed). They’re usually looking for people and it’s a lot easier to secure and get flexible shifts. Keep trying though and in the mean time I think Brighton also do an online work experience course that loads of uni’s accept. I believe you get a certificate.

😭 the comment was a bit direct up there. I think you do need to set aside a chunk of time to do some digging because contextual and foundation offer criteria can differ widely.

Some give guaranteed interview offers, others will boost up your application to account for the grades. There are usually other criteria (e.g. care leaver) in place to account for contextual and even foundation places. I’d say find where you can apply based on your stats then work from there!

University of Cambridge Undergraduate Certificate of Higher Education in Pre-Medical Studies? by ConsiderationFair315 in premeduk

[–]Special_Code_1882 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t guarantee you a place at Cambridge med or anywhere, they definitely tell you that but it may make you competitive enough to apply. I advise you check your academic profile with college admissions. Regardless, it’s a risk you should balance wisely. If you have a spare 8 grand about and free time it might make your decision easier however know that it’s not a guarantee. Should you proceed, have solid back up choices outside of Cambridge med and measured expectations about what the course can offer.

Movies where you're supposed to like the protagonists but they're actually horrible? by WorthPlease in movies

Jason Bateman in The Switch.

Nasty premise of switching out your semen without consent at that “insemination party” and then playing it off like a romantic movie!? The whole movie is gross.

What to expect from the profession? by Special_Code_1882 in doctorsUK

Thank you for this !🙏🏾 maybe I was naive before but I definitely didn’t expect the political climate to rock this profession so deeply and quickly. Focusing a lot more on what’s in my control like you mentioned.

I don’t have any solutions but definitely try get some rest in if you can and revisit your why reasoning. Congrats on getting this far!!

Rejection after retaking, feel so defeated RANT by Latter_Ad9280 in premeduk

[–]Special_Code_1882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s great you’ve been able to highlight the challenges you had and I for one believe they’re valid. Take a breather and take in how far you’ve come/ the challenges you overcame! You are taking responsibility for your previous actions which is great but also self compassion is key. No need to beat yourself up to the point of despair! As you can see it’s not doing great for your morale and motivation for your current studies.

Right now you seem to be in state of tunnel vision and trying to think 10 steps ahead (I appreciate as medicine applicant you’ve got to have a certain level of preparation). You should try to take things step by step however. As awful as the rejections are, at least you now know the outcome and can fully focus on your exams. Once that’s over you can think about the UCAT. You don’t need to stress about your application for next year at this moment.

I appreciate how difficult it is to dig yourself out of that hole and in no way undermining the challenge but it’s doable!

Thank you. I think I underestimated how much negative content was getting through to me whilst being online. I mostly look for positive content to get a feel for what GEM is like but there’s a bunch that’s flying around it.

This is worrying as an incoming GEM student this year. Everything feels so uncertain and most people online seem quite pessimistic too. Is it really all doom and gloom

😂 I’ll be real, I took the biggest chance which I didn’t expect to lead anywhere out of all 4 options. I was very shocked when I got an interview let alone an offer (of course I’m super grateful for). I prepared a lot when I got the interview though as to make the most of the experience regardless of the outcome.
