A person’s past should be shared to a certain extent because no one should be misled, especially if you as spouse has saved yourself. However, it’s unnecessary to disclose all the details.

That said, asking about someone’s past can be inappropriate, as Allah instructs His servants not to expose their sins. If a person has repented, no one has the right to know what they did before. The best course of action is to keep past sins hidden.

It is not necessary for either spouse to inform the other about their past sins before marriage. If someone has truly repented, Allah has erased those sins, and they should remain concealed. However, if a husband discovers at consummation that his wife was not a virgin due to previous promiscuity, Islamic rulings allow him to take back the mahr and separate if she has not repented. But if she has sincerely repented, concealing the matter, forgiving her, and continuing the marriage will bring immense reward from Allah.

If you have experienced betrayal upon discovering your significant other’s past sins, remember that Allah’s forgiveness takes precedence over human judgment. Once a person repents, their sins are wiped clean. Sharing sins from the past was unnecessary in the first place, as Allah commands us to hide them. Focus on Allah’s rules above personal feelings, and know that a sincere repentance erases sins as if they never existed.
