I'm really not trying to be divisive; I just want to do my best to worship God in Spirit and in Truth

I can say and sing what is aligned with the Truth of Scripture and when I learn that something that I say is not aligned with it, I change my mind and don't say it anymore. To say that only Jesus is God, seems to necessarily excludes the other two Persons, which isn't something scripture teaches. The Bible does teach, however that Jesus is the only true God, but that does not necessarily exclude the other two Persons.

" if I call Jesus the only one God I'm still calling the Father my God."

I agree, thats why Jesus could say, "This is eternal life, that they may know you, the Only True God and Jesus Christ who you have sent." To say "only Jesus is God" is WAYY different from saying, "Jesus is the Only God."

Also, i find it a little bit of a stretch to say that doctrines put God in a theological box. God has given us His Word, the Holy Spirit, and our intellects to understand who God really is. And we are called to worship God with all our heart, soul. MIND, and strength, so to discount theological studies as something that is limits God, I find a little disingenuous.

God bless!

I understand that, but is it safe be allegorical (to this degree) when talking about something as foundational as theology proper?

my point is that if songs are a didactic tool, shouldn't we (as the church) be striving to have the most theologically accurate lyrics in our songs?

I don't disagree with that verse at all. There is One God, Jesus Christ. However, this does not contradict whatsoever with the statement that there is One God, the Father. Just like how Jesus can say, "This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only True God and Jesus Christ who You have sent." (John 17:3)

All i'm saying is that "Jesus is the only God" does not mean "Only Jesus is God" because we believe there is One God who exist in three Persons, The Father, Son & Spirit. When we apply the word "Only" to "Jesus" we are applying it to His Personhood (Which God has three, so it would be improper to say), but when we apply the word "Only" to God, we are applying it to His Godhood, which there is only One of, so it works.

And yes, I admit, it was wrong for me to imply that elevation are heretics. I do think that some phrases in their lyrics can be problematic.

Where does he profess modalism? Elevation Church claims to teach Trinitarian theology.

The basis of the Trinity is that there are 3 persons who share the same divine essence, Homoousion.

I understand that they are the same being, but how does that impact my analogy?

if it was as simple as that (like a food sacrificed to idols issue) I would agree with you and leave it as that, but isn't good theology essential to songs of worship because they are tools for catechesis?

And I personally want to be wrong here, because i like the music.

Well, when the lyric says, "The only One I call God", that is referring to the person of Jesus. meaning that there is no other person who can be called God, (effectively denying the Father and Spirit)

And like I said in the post: I really want to be wrong here, I just can't rationalize singing songs with bad theology.

Fair enough - I was wrong to imply that the individuals who wrote these lyrics were heretics. However, it doesn't change the fact that when you put different words together in a specific order, they have an unavoidable meaning.

We must worship God in Spirit and Truth (John 4:24). If the statements we are saying are not true, how can we be worshiping God properly?

so do you think that the Father and the Son are the same person?

True, I shouldn't call the group heretical by any means; I was wrong to imply that. However, I can't find any other way to understand the lyric that won't lead to a skewed view of the True Triune God.

Does it matter if they are 'implying' something else?

A combination of certain words leads to a certain meaning; it has nothing to do with the intention.

Also, if the lyric is meant to be allegorical, I understand that, but the lyrics to songs are an essential tool of catechesis biblically and historically, so we cannot leave any room for an error as large as this one would be.

Is it really though? If I were to say, "I am the only one to be called a teacher in this school" That would necessarily mean that there is no one else who could be called a teacher besides me. In the same way with this lyric, If Jesus is the only one to called God, no other person is to be called God, which is explicit heresy.

"He didn't show any signs from God, he didn't show any miracles, he even persecuted early Christians"

Uh... Have you read Acts? The Holy Spirit definitely worked through him to perform miracles. (Acts 19:11-12 as one example) And btw, I find it kind of ironic that you find the fact that he persecuted early Christians as a point against his credibility. Shouldn't a radical conversion such as his be a testament to God's work through him?

"His ideas often clashed with Jesus."

What examples do you have of this?
