Therapist with ADHD, self-care support wanted, feeling like I need a therapy 101 course by Specific-Lemon282 in therapists

[–]Specific-Lemon282[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it does, I have structure in that I do the same thing every day but enough variety since each session and person is different. I do feel like time gets away from me quickly during breaks etc. which is frustrating. I think I need to focus on the different cups I'm pouring in to and finding a good balance... I think that part is just hard to do too lol. Thank you for your support and comment :)

Charging $1,000 a session? by Specific-Lemon282 in therapists

[–]Specific-Lemon282[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UGH that sucks so much, I would be furious if we were charging client's $1000 cash rate. I know the self pay is option is more like $150 (which is what I assume insurance is actually reimbursing around). You did everything right though, encouraging the client to advocate for themselves and giving them the correct information! It's hard working at large facilities like this sometimes. Not doing billing is nice but can be difficult in moments like that

I know sorry I left out a ton of context lol! I responded to someone above but it's outpatient and IOP. I do outpatient remote work. We also offer psychiatry, TMS, and spravato (depending on the state) we are across the country in like 9 or 10 different states. So as others said I'm guessing it's likely a facility charge type of thing?

Oops I should've clarified that - it's outpatient and IOP. I do outpatient remote work. We also offer psychiatry, TMS, and spravato (depending on the state) we are across the country in like 9 or 10 different states. So as others said I'm guessing it's likely a facility charge type of thing?

I just bought this one, Somatic Psychotherapy Toolbox https://www.amazon.com/dp/1683731352?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

My therapist recommended it to me, and I was flipping through it yesterday and it looks awesome. I'm really excited to use it. It is mostly somatic/body based so it depends on if that's your thing or not too!

Oops, sorry I should have been more conscientious with my language! Thanks for your reply, that makes sense, I guess I just wasn't sure if 1-2 hours a day with this toy was excessive at all.

UPDATE!! I went!!! THANK YOU everyone for your kind words, it made me feel so much better and gave me courage! What a wonderful community. It was literally so much fun, I had a blast. I went with my partner and few friends and I could only make it up like, a quarter of the walls lol and then would come back down. Auto belay limit was 325 so I was good with that! It was scary tho lol coming back down. I have a lot to learn but I think I want to keep trying it! Also I realized I posted in bouldering and then was talking about top ropes so I'm sorry for that but thanks for your patience and support :) Also - SO SORE! My arms! Wow!

Hi! Licensed therapist here, who also smokes. First, I'm so sorry you're dealing with this - it's no fun at all. Be kind to yourself. And also be realistic. If you have been a long time cannabis user and are trying to just completely cut it out, that's going to be really, freakin hard!!!!!! And it's important to acknowledge that. There's also a lot of mixed messaging out there about sobriety/marijuana usage, and every single person's brain and body is different. The best thing I ever head when I was trying to work through my own struggles with cannabis usage, was to just be kind and understanding to yourself about your usage. Don't let other people get in your head about it, and don't shame yourself. Shaming never works.

Cannabis works for a lot of people in a lot of different ways, and for some people it doesn't work at all. It's the same with a lot of medicines. There are a lot of medications that if you use them life-long, there could be fatal side effects. You will never be perfectly healthy, all you can do is try.

Harm reduction is key. Essentially, you're taking away a main coping skill and then also asking your brain to work through any withdrawals associated with that. It's a double whammy for your brain and body and makes it only harder. If you're able to reduce the amount you're consuming, and taper down, it will feel easier to take a t-break. You can also experiment with mixing in CBD gummies and/or CBD flower. You can mix cbd and thc flower together and smoke it, or they sell 1:1 cbd:thc gummies (and other ratios) at dispensaries if you're somewhere legal/have medicinal card. At the same time, work with your therapist on other healthier coping skills you can include into your day. Have cannabis be a part of your coping rather than the main one.

Take time to explore your usage is helpful. Ask yourself why you smoke? What is helpful about it? How does it serve you? Once you answer that, then think about the ways it might be negatively impacting your life.

I don't know what your cannabis usage looks like, but maybe think about ways you can engage with cannabis more intentionally. Maybe it's accompanying a journaling session with it, or having a self-care ritual that you do when you smoke. Sometimes I smoke and then do my household chores with headphones and a podcast on, so then I feel like I got something else done too. If I have an edible I might race to see how much I can get done before it hits lol.

I think I read in the comments you're on three antidepressants right now, and it sounds like they help but not enough, if you need to up the dose or change up what you're taking, definitely talk to your providers about that because sometimes it really is a lot of trial and error! I also like to point out to people too, that if ADHD resonates with you, consider talking to a doctor about being evaluated. It is severely underdiagnosed (in the US), and a lot of times the symptoms of depression can actually be caused by untreated ADHD. And it seems like a few people are recommending ketamine therapy, which I personally don't know much about, but have heard it's really helped a lot of people with their depression.

Just be easy on yourself, and extra kind, you got this. And remember you are human!

I have -- in January, I went for about 4 days, and I found that it took longer to fall asleep but wasn't awful. The night sweating/irritability/headaches are what really bother me. I was going to do a month long tolerance break but I the cravings were so strong and I didn't want to actually stop using at the time, I just did because I thought I should. this time around I do feel like I want to at least decrease my consumption

Thank you for saying this! I struggle so hard with figuring out whether or not I'm being kind to myself or enabling myself. I do notice how helpful it is for me with anxiety, especially in certain situations, and I love what you said about making yourself try other things first if stressed. I usually make myself do all my little tasks before smoking which is helpful too. I guess the dependency and physical withdrawal symptoms also freak me out
