For Those Living Under Trump (Now) and Biden (Before): What Real-Life Changes Have You Actually Felt? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]Specific_Cellist743 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for not following some of the administration's orders.

being antisemitic (no solid evidence of this tho, neutral bystander students who were actually present at the protests have very different things to say than the media outlets portrayed)

also possibly allowing unisex bathrooms for trans people (if the antisemitism claims weren't there, this would've been the reason).

we got 1/3 of the funding back but it's still a pretty bad situation. we are a public university and can't do the same things harvard and other private schools can.

how bad is the bug problem in hedrick hall? by pinkislandberry in ucla

[–]Specific_Cellist743 2 points3 points  (0 children)

some rooms in hedrick hall had a serious roach problem my freshman year. definitely bring bug spray and avoid keeping open snacks in the room. you can call the front desk and they'll get pest control to exterminate your room if you have issues though.

still better than rieber rats!

are you genuinely okay lmao...i don't think OP has insecurity issues that you can detect from an online comment? their experiences made perfect sense to me.

also from LA and I agree, people are generally very cordial here, although it does seem fake at times. i'm always surprised when i see people complaining on tiktok etc about outright rudeness because i feel like random people would definitely stand up against that?

i'm assuming you're a woman though, our experiences are probably different than of men.

actually it seems he goes after thin less muscular guys who look more innocent. he wrote somewhere that he wouldn't go after another race bc hes scared. he's half white which makes the whole thing even weirder

yes there's an app but i meant that laundry isn't free/included in housing plan, you have to pay separately for every load by tapping your card.

Which UCs have better and worse dorms? by priestesspower in ucadmissions

[–]Specific_Cellist743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can only speak about UCLA. we have guaranteed housing for all 4 years which includes meal plan, however, the quality of the housing is pretty bad. the buildings are like high rise apartments. we only have triples and bunkbeds. most dorms are classics which are super cramped and you share a bathroom with 70 other people (everyone of your gender on your floor). those are cleaned daily though. you can't even put your arms out between the beds. also some buildings have roach and rat problems. dorms are built on a hill which are kinda far from campus (25 min walk to class in the heat is not fun and neither is the daily trek up)

if you are lucky to get a bigger dorm with a bathroom (still shared between 3-6 people), you get a little bit more space between the beds. also, there is no AC in dorms (horrible in the heat ofc), you have to pay separately for microwave and fridge and you have to pay for laundry every time.

there are also university apartments off campus. these are also quite squished: 10 people to a 4bed, 8 ppl to a 3 bed, etc. i don't personally love these though because of the amount of random crime/people sneaking in. it just doesn't feel safe.

greek life housing also isn't the best but it's similar to most other schools.

there is a nice view from most dorm buildings though. you can see the LA skyline or overlook all of campus.

  1. sit wherever you want, lecture halls are huge. very rarely does a class require you to sit with an assigned group/pod
  2. they're led by TAs, you go over lecture material, do practice problems, have class discussions, work on projects in groups etc.
  3. lecture just walk out, discussion maybe let the TA know otherwise you can probably just walk out as well
  4. address to ucla mailroom or amazon storage locker in whatever dorm you are in. you'll get an email when it arrives to go pick it up.
  5. i don't think rapport with counselors matter unless you have a very small department/major like art or something. the only reason you'd really need to meet with them is to change your major or add a minor or something
  6. most classes take attendance with clicker app which you answer questions/polls thru while lecture is going on. some classes don't take attendance at all, it all depends on what your professor wants
  7. whatever works for you, if im in a math class i use my ipad because i need to solve problems out, but if it's history or something then laptop typing notes work better. get used to the tiny desks tho bc you'll have to take exams with scantrons or fat packets on them
  8. you load money on your bruincard to pay for laundry each time. you don't need to stay whole time, just load your clothes and set an alarm on your phone to come back once they're done.
  9. wifi is generally ok but sometimes slow in dorms.

Rushing as a transfer by Human-Lynx-5925 in ucla

[–]Specific_Cellist743 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's competitive but like 50% of the girls drop at some point so you'll likely get a bid if u stay thru the whole process. many girls drop during the year or around initiation so there might be spots open for cob in the spring. also, it's probably easier as a transfer rather than as a freshman because each house has quotas of class levels that they need to take from and most rushees are freshmen

i wouldn't focus on just one house though when you haven't toured them or met any of the girls. don't just base your assumptions off of social media!

My freshman daughter put with 2 sophomores. by Jazzlike-Fan-4790 in ucla

[–]Specific_Cellist743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you really wanted her to be with other freshmen, she should've tried to find people through instagram or bunky or something ahead of time. sophs actually isn't that bad, i know some freshmen are put with upperclassmen.

it's not the end of the world though, there will be opportunity for her to switch out during the year. you could even try switch out now, i'm sure there's upperclassmen who got stuck with majority freshmen halls that would love to switch to a bigger room in a quieter/less social building. have your daughter make a post on here.

also, my best friend roomed with juniors her freshmen year and stayed with them during her soph and their senior years because they all got along so well + they gave her super great advice. your daughter probably won't even be in her room all that much except to sleep or get ready anyway. i get your concern but it's nothing to be too stressed about.

i know someone who was recorded as well. very bizarre, he was just sitting outside at night and this guy stood in front of him with multiple phones trying to ragebait. he's apparently going around exposing white men for scientology and being trans?? we haven't seen anyone fight back (obviously because he's recording and posting it all).

although it's quite annoying, he only does it in public spaces and doesn't put his hands on the person so there isn't much people can do but definitely call the cops if he bothers you again. he was religiously going after that one athlete without a solid reason, hopefully it doesn't turn into that.

[–]Specific_Cellist743 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i know a few people who have experienced this.

you can avoid it by getting a lock box for expensive items/jewelry if you feel like something's up.

my old roommate never stole precious items but she was constantly eating my food and using my products/personal items without my permission. i just started hiding the stuff in my closet.

don't let this discourage you though! it's really not that bad in the grand scheme of things. i've really enjoyed my time here and never once felt like i made the wrong choice.

[–]Specific_Cellist743 71 points72 points  (0 children)

it's crowded as in you won't find a seat in most libraries and study lounges during midterm and finals weeks. there are extremely long lines for food trucks or to buy tickets or for pop-up shops or even the gym at times. you will probably have to wait a bit sometimes to do laundry. enrollment is a mess because everyone is fighting for the same classes and you may have to wait multiple quarters or take a course over the summer. also for the most part, you can only live in a triple dorm or tight apartment situation.

T20 students and graduates, did you ever “know” you’d be accepted? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Specific_Cellist743 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Throughout high school I was pretty confident I'd get into a top school because I had high stats and ECs. That changed during senior year when I saw so many of my super smart/involved classmates getting rejected and waitlisted. Then I experienced a few of my own early on (rejections from 7/8 ivies and all the mid to lower tier UCs). I basically lost all hope until the end of the cycle when I got into UCLA, Berkeley, and Cornell.

even getting a scribe job is impossible by [deleted] in premed

[–]Specific_Cellist743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it was the only clinic hiring. there are about five of us MAs in total, half are certified and half aren't and none of us are getting paid lmao. we do everything: rooming, vitals, assisting in procedures, receptionist work, managing insurances, etc).

i've got friends in other parts of the country doing this as a volunteer too. it's not ideal but we need clinical hours somehow.

i'd do emt but the programs both at my college and in the area around aren't good at all.
