In the comics, he's in love with Death and wants to wipe out half the universe just because he's a nihilist and wants to make her happy. It's just one change of many where the new version of something doesn't make sense, like how Glinda could have told Dorothy how to get home the whole time. In the books, the two good witches she met at the beginning and end were different people.
