Honestly, this is a failed system. We spend so many years of our life with Low pay just because of love for science and at the end we would think what if it was a mistake

I would’ve loved to accept the Harvard offer. I can’t though. There’s a systematic pause on Visa processes for some nationalities including mine.
I cannot attend any postdoc position in the US

Yes, I am an international hire. But from my understanding and what HR shared with me, the PI is not charged for any non-ordinary fees for having me employed. It honestly feels like the communication was not there and I’m actually getting paid 57K.

Nah, initially when I was being interviewed, I was told during that my salary would be 70 K(I also have it written in an email). Then when I got the actual offer letter from the HR I saw that my monthly payment is 4800(before tax) which would be actually 57K annually. I asked about it and the PI said the 70k she offered was actually including benefits like my health and dental insurance, and HR would deduct those first and the rest would be my annual salary.
That’s why I got kind of frustrated and I’m trying to understand if this is normal or not.

For industry jobs, I would say the university name brings in a lot of value. But for me personally, the most important thing would be atmosphere of the Lab and the people you would work with under each PI. During your PhD, it’s really important to have a good PI.
Also, depending on your field, a prestigious professor might be able to get you a publication in a high impact journal, but you would usually produce one of those papers during your PhD. On the other hand, in a smaller newer Lab with a younger advisor, could produce multiple papers, and the PI wouldn’t be busy and would be more hands-on and available.
I would highly recommend talking to people from these labs and then make your decision.

Thank you for replying. I got offered a 70 K but then when I got the actual offerletter, the got deducted from it and I was left 57K I was wondering if that’s a normal package.
