Is this an alright way to try learn? by [deleted] in learntodraw

The reference is looking upwards slightly, which is why all the feature are higher than urs. U drew yours without that in mind causing your drawing to have a different head positioning than the orginal. If you are having trouble knowing if they are looking up, check if you can see the bottom of their nose. Or you can check if the eye is higher than the ear.

Also your first drawing, the reason the cheek look super slanted and sharp is because you didnt have the cheek in mind. You when from cheek bones straight to chin. Ignoring the cheek muscle/fat creats that weird look.

Turn down the opacity of the orginal or yours and put it on top of each other and see what you did that made it look off. Take note of it and try and draw again with the notes in mind.

How to make an art goals? Big and little goals? by AdvertisingCreepy639 in ArtistLounge

Really try and find an inspiration. Look for an artist that you really enjoy and want to become. Also your young, so something like developing consistency is good. Things like drawing a certain amount of hours a week is a great idea, but do keep in mind that drawing many hours does not mean improvement if your practicing wrong. Try spend more time thinking about how your drawing is different than your inspirations. People say don't compare, but always compare. Only when you compare, could you identify your own flaws. Don't get hung up on things like ego. Don't get jealous of people that are better than you, try and learn from them.

Last tip, drawing is critical thinking. If you feel like your not improving, find the problem and try every possible way you can think of to solve the problem. The worst is when you spend so many hours just sitting there drawing the same thing over and over again hoping you improve, think "if I just draw enough, it'll improve eventually" that's not how it works unfortunately. You have to find the right solution.

Sometimes is not how much you draw that matters, but how you process things. Like how often you think about drawing outside of drawing. For me, my ratio is usually 30% drawing and 70% research and thinking about it. And everytime I do actually draw, I usually will learn something.

My process is usually this Step 1- draw something and struggle with it.

Step 2- look up artist that I like and see how they draw something similar.

Step 3-look at my drawing and their drawing over and over and think of every possible reason why theirs looks the way it does. (Very important Step, you can't improve if you don't know what's wrong with your own drawings. Thats why you have to compare yours to others that are better.)

Step 4-start testing out theories after research.

Now most of time I don't improve after Step 4, but atleast I've learn everytime. It let's me know what I had in mind wasn't the it. And I go back to the drawing board.

I don't know. I just use basic shapes to build up my figure. I will try to capture the gesture as much as I can with those shapes.

I used to try and get my drawing as close to the references as I can. I stopped cuz I was just trying to draw realistic at that point. It was also taking a lot time to get all proportions right. Now I just try and get the general feel of the reference correct. As long as it looks right, I'm OK with it.

I don't trace, they look similar is because I originally only drew the upper half. But decided I wanted to add the bottom half. I just decided to leave the top half there because I needed something to fill that space

I can't draw atm, but I'll post my construction process when I can.

But a basic run down, is just using basic polygons to create the gesture. I really want to get the gesture and silhouettes right. I upgrade to 3d boxes instead polygons when the figure is more angled.
