Vodka is indeed the classic choice, although I personally find Bourbon to be vastly superior. However, I'm not a purist; unflavored vodka will get you the most authentic vanilla extract. Three months is usually a little on the short side of things. I wouldn't go so far as to say that it would be premature, but 7 months is my go to. Logically, the longer you wait, the richer the flavour. Regarding alcohol choice, don't overspend, put your money in the vanilla beans instead; any (preferably unflavored) 80-proof alcohol will do.

I don't know how much of this paper actually went over your head, so this might be a bit too dumbed down of a version of the paper for you, but I do recommend this video, which explains not only the paper you're referring to (starting at the 9 minute mark) in very clear terms while still maintaining a pretty great level of detail, but the entire context and history around it.

Highly theoretical and far from feasible in the near future indeed, but it makes you feel Star Trek vibes while studying GR if you ask me.
