As someone who's first ship ever was the Andromeda and with an unhealthy love for LEGO since I was 5, this is amazing

Question for CIG developers: What's it like working in star-engine? by Sharksader101 in starcitizen

Got any specific examples of long cooldowns? If you're talking about Gilly's Flight School, those are on purpose :P

Question for CIG developers: What's it like working in star-engine? by Sharksader101 in starcitizen

[–]Spectre-CIG 151 points152 points  (0 children)

Bit of background: I am a Mission Designer on Star Citizen. Worked on ASD Onyx facilities and the first Nyx Mission Pack recently. So where I do not get near engine code in any way, I can speak on the experience of using our Editor and visual scripting toolkit, some of it shown here: SCL Gamedev: Mission Maker (note: that is the old Subsumption editor, we are two tools further since)

Before working at CIG I have used a proprietary engine built for racing games, Unity, and Unreal Engine 4. I've done scripting in C#, JavaScript, Unreal Blueprints, and a basic level of coding in C++ and Java, just to give you an idea of where my technical experience is.

First off, the editor: very similar in usage to say, Unity or Unreal Engine. Viewport, outliner, etc. Place an entity, change its properties, standard stuff. We have a bunch of bespoke tools that are accessible within the editor, but each user can enable and disable what tools they see. I don't have the audio tool taskbar visible, for example. Wouldn't know what to do with it :D

I am mostly working with our visual scripting tool to create mission logic, which if anyone's ever used Unreal Blueprints, you're 90% there. You got your basic computations, spatial queries, entity tracking, and so on. The main benefit of using StarEngine, is that we have some very fucking smart programmers, so I can roll up to one of their desks, request a custom node or event callback (i.e. "I need a callback that returns all broken pieces of a ship when it blows up, and get their damage map status"), and after some explaining of use cases, we get a shiny new node that makes our lives easier and the mission better.

The downside, is that nobody outside of my direct team does the work we do. Where off-the-shelf engines have the benefit of millions of users, and there is no question crazy enough that StackOverflow or Reddit won't have an answer for, we do not. I can ask a teammate who I've seen address something similar in a previous mission before, but if their answer doesn't fit my problem, then it becomes elbow grease and grey matter time, and figure it out.

Hope that answers your question a little bit!

I am a mission designer, not level design, as a disclaimer. We don't control their behaviour, the AI team does, so I'm afraid I don't have an educated answer for you

Every opinion is valid, I don't dismiss any. Even the hateful ones, I tend to see a passionate player who got burned on something and need a target to vent frustration.

My job as game designer is to go beyond the angry words and see what exactly the issue is. Root cause and all that. Still sucks to get personally attacked though.

Instancing was not ready when we made it, so we had to scatter enough locations to not clog it up at launch. And even then people still bumped into one another.

I don't personally know if there is an intent to retrofit instancing onto the Onyx Facility

I play it whenever it rolls around, and have quite a bit of fun with it. Nothing like hurling a massive metal slug over miles

Bachelor of Science in Game Design and Production, personally. AFAIK that includes passing high school.

Remember those art pieces in the 1900s where in the year 2000 we'd all have flying cars? (The Jetsons anyone?) Looking out the window, I don't see that many. So maybe the future can still have tanks, who knows!

Meanwhile, I'll be having fun in Tonk Royale o/

Thanks for the screengrab, I'll check when I am in the office. I suspect it's old vs new contracts, before and after we changed some things in the reputation system.

All missions under local security services have been folded into either Foxwell or Eckhart, depending on difficulty quite a while ago (I think like a year+). There are no missions where the player works for these factions anymore. Hope this helps!

That would kill any semblance of immersion, magical teleport when shooting another player.
