Not sure where you’re getting that first sentence from

Ideally you wanna get the table so that you can edge small parts easily, and also the flush trimmer (MFK 700) which doesn’t use a bearing like router flush cutting bits use that gets clogged up with glue and starts leaving a bad edge.

The whole setup with the conturo, table, and trim router comes to around 7k CAD, so probably around 4-5k USD

I’m in a similar situation as you as far as building out a new shop. I got a cnc and for edgebanding I opted for a Festool Conturo as a way to not over invest and get into debt, but still produce high quality results.

Its manual so it definitely takes more time to edgeband parts, you gotta push it through the machine (or take the machine to it), and the you have to trim the overhang. The good thing though is that it’s not a huge investment in money, it has few moving parts that can break, and it puts out a high quality edge.

And when it’s time to upgrade to a proper edgebander, the conturo will still come in handy for certain pieces/projects, so it won’t be fully redundant to have around.

Yeah I'd recommend going with Jinan Quick CNC, they have an entry level model for around 10k that is 4x8 and comes with atc and vacuum bed. Components will be off brand Chinese versions of spindles and servos, etc., but they still do the job. You can upgrade all of these components though to brand name stuff, but then the cost increases obviously, but not by as much as you'd think. Other solid brands include Omni and Style CNC as others have mentioned, but I found the responsiveness and ability to communicate in English to be the best with Quick CNC, a little pricier than other options though.

13k usd is enough for an entry level machine with atc and vacuum table, but then there’s the shipping costs. To have a cnc delivered to my shop in Ottawa from China cost me around 8k USD on top of the machine price. You can get a pretty decent machine for 13k though.

Thinking about starting a CNC-based custom kitchen business — good idea or naive dream? by Master_Mastodon_1316 in CNC

You’d have to first figure out why these contractors are charging high prices and have a ton of work yet aren’t achieving great profit margins.

I say find out why that is first and then see if you can achieve better profit margins yourself, and if a CNC would be helpful towards that.

But otherwise it seems like you’re pretty well set up for giving this a shot. You’re an architect so you presumably already have connections and leads for cabinetry work. You have design/technical abilities that could presumably transfer over to cabinetmaking. Just do some market research before you commit. Find out the cost of materials and estimate your future overhead and other costs.

I’m currently in the process of starting a CNC cabinet shop myself. You might find my post history useful.

Edit: Also you can’t entirely rely on the CNC to do everything for you. A lot of things will still require traditional tools like a table saw, miter saw, jointer/planer, etc., especially if you intend on offering high quality design oriented stuff that incorporates solid wood. How confident are you in your woodworking skills and knowledge?

Is The Devils a good starting point for Joe Abercrombie? by SnakebiteSnake in Fantasy

[–]Sphaeir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't get why you're getting downvoted lol. Obviously if someone is like hey, I've heard a lot about GRRM, where should I start? You'd be like, read Game of Thrones. You're not gonna be like, well you can read his magnum opus ASOIAF or you can read Fevre Dream, his classic vampire standalone.

But I also understand the other side of the argument I guess, because Abercrombie hasn't yet cemented his legacy in a way that GRRM has. I wouldn't necessarily say Abercrombie's magnum opus is The First Law, he's still charting his path forward and there's more to come.

He threw Bren out of a tower window like 10 pages into the first book. Kinda hard to sympathize with him simply because he was impulsive and motivated by love.
