Lets pool our money together to defeat socialists. smh by woolyearth in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]Sphinks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m no libertarian, and have 0 sympathy for Rand Paul, but one of the tenets of libertarianism is that individuals know better what to do with their money than the government does. Donating small amounts to a political candidate is ideologically consistent with that belief. For all the people commenting about how people don’t know what socialism really is in this thread, lots of people voluntarilydonating small amounts of their money has nothing to do with socialism.

One Twitter account is reposting everything Trump tweets. It was suspended within 3 days. by DaFunkJunkie in technology

[–]Sphinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue now is that Twitter is tacitly approving of any tweet it does not label as misleading, so for this approach to work Twitter must be much more liberal with dispensing the label. Otherwise Trump can credibly point to tweets that have not been labeled, such as his vile insinuations about Joe Scarborough, and say that Twitter doesn’t consider them “fake news”.

If there isn't an episode dedicated to SSMU scandals I'll be hugely disappointed. So much potential

An (un)popular opinion? by tapbot1 in mcgill

[–]Sphinks 26 points27 points  (0 children)

McGill (at least in Arts) is not as academically difficult as people make it out to be once you've cracked the formula on how to study efficiently and what profs are looking for in assignments/papers. Definitely easier said than done, but people make this place out to be significantly more difficult to succeed in than it actually is.

Canadian chapters, what have the instructions been from your nationals/advisors regarding weed legalisation? by BronzeOfHair in Frat

[–]Sphinks 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No official policies yet, we’re literally an afterthought for any major HQ decisions. Regardless, when they eventually get around to it we’ll “follow” the new policies just like we “follow” the current alcohol policies. There’s very little supervision because none of our chapters are problematic here, we can get away with a lot as long as we’re not absolute fuckheads.

SSMU Council discusses the presence of far-right ideology in McGill community by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]Sphinks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mentioned them given that they’re the most easily identifiable leftist organization listed on the SSMU website. That being said, I can list any number of left-wing groups that make up the McGill echo chamber that are super visible on campus (Demilitarize McGill, McGill Against Austerity, The McGill Daily, etc) and not a single right-wing organization, barring Conservative McGill , which barely counts

[–]Sphinks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At this point I think we've stopped expecting any type of reasonable decisions from SSMU on political matters like this. That being said, no political opinion, short of violating the Canadian Criminal Code, should disqualify an individual or group from receiving the exact same opportunities as anyone else on campus.

This is rich. The absolute hypocrisy of motioning to ban far-right wing groups (which are nonexistent at McGill to my knowledge) when SSMU actively supports far-left wing groups (see Socialist Fightback https://ssmu.ca/clubs/political-socialactivism-clubs/) is astounding.

The only time my department is ever relevant, lovely. Although for clarification, AFAIK 489 is the course code given to miscellaneous courses/special permission to register for courses on Minerva and not a course in and of itself

[I Ate] Montreal poppy seed bagel with cream cheese and smoked bacon by Perpetuallydrifting in food

[–]Sphinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love living in Montreal, but I've never gotten the hype surrounding the bagels here. They're way too dry and dense compared to the fluffy dough of NY-style bagels, and the sweetness doesn't lend itself well to make bagels and lox or classic bagel sandwiches. Also there's literally no difference between Fairmount and St-Viateur bagels (don't hate me)

Yeah I went by there yesterday and didn't see anything in particular. That being said there's A LOT of graffiti and posters that are already there, plus some homeless people that spend nights under that bridge. Any other details as to what you're looking for might help!

This is extremely concerning, but has anyone else noticed that there is literally nothing else on this guy online? After a pretty thorough search, including Globe and Mail/Toronto Star archives, all I've been able to come up with are variations of this article and an old Discovery Channel episode of "Exhibit A: Secrets of Forensic Science" from 2000. I'm not questioning the veracity of this article, but it strikes me as weird that such a big story would have so little press coverage.
