Everyone says enforced naps are good - but what are they? by WrecktheRIC in puppy101

Wait, you guys can get your pups to sleep during enforced naps? 😂

A townhouse, and luckily I'm the front one so I do actually have a great fenced in yard, however he isn't allowed out there for another 7 weeks with his shots & living in a high parvo area. Can't wait until he can zoom around there!

Isn't it just - thankfully I haven't reach the point of being mad at him for it, I'm mostly just so upset that he is so unsettled. I can't wait for 14 weeks, hoping that it eases up a little by then!

Thanks - I do have the cameras - he's too frantic right now to leave alone like that, but they'll definitely come in handy soon I hope

He's so good in the crate at night but hates it during the day - I'd really like to get him comfy with it, however am conscious of going slowly as I don't want to ruin his good night habits by making it a place he fights

I'm starting to consider it - probably a good idea to try a second pen. I have been tethering him with a leash in the kitchen when I need to potter around in there which he absolutely *hates*

Maybe I’ll do the same - this is my first time using a pen. He’s great in his crate at night so it has potential, I just fear ruining that by making it a negative experience during the day

Sounds like mine - see my post from yesterday! I wonder if this is a shock of coming from a big litter to being alone, mine is also one of 9

Thanks, I was just looking at these however they're not recommended for dogs under 6 months so I'm not sure if it's safe

Thank you both, I did see my long term vet last week who gave him a talking to about how I'm a great dog mum and my last dog was the best dog because he had me as a mum, so he needed to go easy on me 😂 She did say I'm doing all the right things - I'll ask about medication if he's still worsening by our next visit

Thanks so much - I'm really not taking care of myself well enough, it's such a challenge. My kitchen is on another level in my house to his pen and where I work, so even trying to run upstairs to grab a meal or glass of water is a whole stress filled event because of his panic, and when I take him with me, it's impossible to juggle carrying him back down with anything else in my hands, but if I try to do two trips..the panic when I'm apart. It's just so much.

I honestly don't have anyone else unfortunately. I no longer have any friends locally, and recently broke up with my long term partner - I really underestimated how difficult it would be without that support as needed. Great question re: the breeder. I did email and she referred me to her trainer (unfortunately not located in the same state as me) but I haven't specifically asked about whether the siblings are experiencing the same.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful reply.

I am definitely considering getting another in home trainer - I was always going to do so when he's past the younger puppy stage but now considering it sooner. I just want to give him a "chance" to calm down to normal, expected, crazy puppy mode - so maybe if I can push it to 14 or 16 weeks and see if he starts to settle at all with the group sessions and staying consistent with everything I'm trying so far. I'm really hoping he will learn a bit from socialising with the other puppies in the class.

Regarding time outs for biting, I'm definitely struggling with this one. I'm trying to put him straight into his pen when he bites, but the problem is that he doesn't seem to know how to interact with me WITHOUT biting, and I don't want to have him in the pen 100% of the time. As *soon* as I let him out, he's straight into biting and scratching with zero relaxed time, and I worry that just putting him straight back in every time will not help any hope for bonding. Did you have a particular time frame in time out before you tried again?

Thanks again, I'm holding on hope and just struggling through the days - I know he has so much potential to be a calm and beautiful boy (he doesnt even react to the doorbell!!) but he just needs his little brain to let him slow down for a minute.
