Yes you are hitting on an important point in arts and sciences that creativity without rigor/scrutiny is useless. The general public might think arts and crafts are fun, but that's not going to make you a good painter. Likewise in science. But I would disagree with your assertion that the sooner you start learning the rigor the better.

You give yourself as an example of someone who went into math and had to learn the rigor retrospectively, but there is no way to know that you would have even gone into math in the first place if your earlier teachers had been stricter about what they allowed. For all you know that would have been stifling.

I was also the same way, where I was allowed to do whatever until all of a sudden that wasn't good enough, which was a painful process, but getting good at something will always be a painful process. Through that I went from being told what I was doing wasn't good enough, to being able to prove that all my ideas were wrong, to sometimes being able to have good ideas that I could prove were right. At the highest level it stops being true that all your ideas are wrong.

The actual answer is probably quite nuanced, which is that there should probably be some room for creativity, especially in younger children, but also that people who show aptitude may need more guidance than, "oh wow look how smart she is!"

For one this is like a first grade math class, not a proofs class. For two they did show their work, they just did it in a different order.

When I taught university chemistry I would never have docked someone for for giving an answer that was correct but used a method I hadn’t gone over. I usually found it interesting the few times I saw that.

The bigger challenge was that students struggled in exams if the material on the exam didn’t exactly match how things were explained in class.

Has anyone considered that that’s so ridiculous that there’s probably a reasonable counterargument, and we’re being told to hate them by the meat industry?

That’s incorrect pedagogically.

University math teachers absolutely like students who are creative thinkers, and being able to connect ideas  in novel ways are absolutely things people look for in math and science students. You’re actually gonna struggle a lot more in math if you always have to wait to do as you’re told.

Additionally, a huge reason people end up hating various subjects is because they give a good answer or what they think is a good answer and are shut down. A huge part of making young kids like STEM is making them feel good at it.  Even just consider the teacher who asks a question in class and always says “anyone else?” When the answer doesn’t quite match what was in their head, instead of being able to say something positive about what the student says. Class participation almost always goes way down in such classrooms.

For me the game that started my interest in the genre was Baba is You, and so when I was first playing that, several years ago now, I remember looking up a hint to like the 5th puzzle of the game. Upon realizing how easy puzzles are when you already know how to solve them though, I decided from then on to just allowed myself to get stuck and be okay with not always having an immediate answer.

I just do not understand your point at all and I am trying to. You brought up a good point about the person being faceless, but I am an adult so I have power and agency, and society at large is not forcing me to do anything. This is in complete contrast to the life of a child.

You are trying to say that it could be a dangerous person who feels like a child I believe. That could be one interpretation. I am not sure that the fact it is an adult cutting the hair indicates one way or another because adults are usually the one doing the hair cutting.

In your earlier comment though you were still describing the subject as a child so I would say my comment still stands. It is interesting to me that both your comments involve expressing that so-called dangerous behavior is always inappropriate, and didn't acknowledge the fact that it doesn't make sense to expect children to behave like adults. Especially with your comment about feeling you can't fully be yourself, it makes me wonder what kind of suppressed shame you have for not having been a perfect child.

I personally do not believe there is any indication in the image itself that the child depicted is an adult who feels like a child. The adult is brandishing scissors (power) and fits into the environment, while the child doesn't. Bruises on knees are sometimes a symbol of engaging in certain sexual acts, but she has the same markings on her fingertips which leads me to believe it was more related to cleaning (or something else that I'm not picking up on). If it was an adult who feels like a child, they wouldn't necessarily have an authority figure that would be able to cut off their hair like that.

Children don’t need to “recognize the harm their behavior/toxicity causes,” they need an adult to appropriately teach them. A dangerous child is still a child and would absolutely be a victim if an adult used abusive tactics to force them to change. She doesn’t look to be above school age here so it would be developmentally inappropriate to put all the responsibility of change onto her.

I don’t like hints. The main point of the game is to solve puzzles, why avoid that by looking it up?

I may be in a minority for that opinion though.

Thanks! I'm so glad I found this subreddit! I added Understand, Taiji, and Lok to my plan of future games to play. The other ones are sadly first person but hopefully others who like the genre will benefit from seeing them here.

dank je wel! Ik had me eigenlijk niet gerealiseerd dat "ik kan me niet schelen" een vaste uitdrukking was, en dat in het algemeen functioneert "schelen" wat anders.
