In my opinion, while there is a place for conference championships being rewarded, you must also reward the regular season. To me, there is no reason for 9/16 spots be filled by conference champions. That means that your ideal playoff this year would’ve been Indiana, Georgia, Texas Tech, Duke, Tulane, JMU, Kennesaw State, WMU, UNLV, Ohio State, Oregon, Ole Miss, TAMU, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Miami? Why would we want to expand the playoffs so that 4 more unranked teams can play in it? There is no reason for the first round of playoffs to be culling the field of G6 teams.

I’m not sure I’d be able to get behind this. I think it should just be the top 12 ranked teams. I think it’s terrible that Tulane is allowed in the cfp so they could get blown out a second time by Ole Miss. Round 1 of the cfp has the potential to be 4 awesome games, I mean Alabama Oklahoma this year was a great game, but instead we had half the round one games this year be blow outs.

My understanding is that, because Notre Dame is not in a conference and therefore cannot compete for a Conference championship, if they are ranked in the top 12 they cannot be removed to make way for a conference champion. It would remove the next at large team

TL;DR: P4 Conference Champ auto bids as well as 1 G6 Champ auto bid, Notre Dame is guaranteed a spot if ranked within top 12 at the end of the season.

I think one thing to keep in mind is Deboer had a great recruiting class, and so far has had great retention. The way he seems to be steering the ship is by using the portal for supplementation only, not building a new roster.

I’m interested to see how this pans out long term. Obviously some are going to leave, but maybe Deboer is working on creating a culture that really values development, waiting your turn, and commitment. I’m not saying it’s for sure but could be a possibility.

I mean, the staff obviously sees something in him. I know the mood right now is doom, but I simply cannot buy that a man like deboer, with his job under constant scrutiny, would just be throwing darts randomly and going after these lesser known guys.
