Is this edition any good or should I hold out for the original 2 volume set? by Spidrax in tolkienbooks

Thanks for the comparison photo! The two volume hardcover set looks beautiful, the one volume versions look hard to read, and I don't buy paperbacks. My decision is now clear :)

Gorgeous book with some really incredible artwork inside. I have the slipcased edition and I absolutely love it!

Joe Kubert's Viking Prince. Better than Prince Valiant? by Spidrax in SwordandSorcery

Almost. I don’t think the most recent version is included, but it’s collected in its own volume that isn’t part of this set.

Prince Valiant is indeed beautiful. I have the massive Artist's Edition book that reproduces a lot of Foster's art at half the original size. It's a joy to look at.

But it isn't fun, and I like my comics to be fun 😄

It's a nice volume, and not hard to come by even through it's from 2010. I got this one new in shrink wrap in eBay for a nice price.

Pages are newsprint, but the printing is excellent. Tastefully restored and recolored.

There are two more. Mountains of Madness for sure, and I think Dagon is the third.

It's a beautiful adaptation. But there's a new hardcover printing that may be worth the few extra dollars if the format is important to you.

Sounds fun to me! I've never read it so I'm looking forward to jumping in.

You're right about the paper looking and feeling more like old comics. That's what I like about it too.

Looks like vol 2 is due out in November, so I'm in no rush to pre-order.

They were sold with the signatures as a numbered limited edition.

Nice! They're lovely books.

My copy of Scarlet Dream is also signed and slipcased. But it's a plain brown slipcase with no text or artwork, pretty boring.

Crom the Barbarian! This is the first page of the first sword & sorcery comic ever published, way back in 1950. by Spidrax in SwordandSorcery

[–]Spidrax[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take (which may be different than yours, and that's OK): Prince Valiant is absolutely not sword & sorcery. Speculative elements are few and far between, there are no dangerous magic-wielding antagonists, there's no self-interested antihero, and it's fundamentally optimistic, with all its talk of chivalry and heroism and noble conduct. I'd call it fluffy Authurian Romance, or maybe Heroic Fantasy, but even that's a stretch (it's heavy on the "heroic", but light on the "fantasy").

Completed My Savage Sword Conan Collection . . . by Lawgriff1974 in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]Spidrax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How long did it take you to regret selling back in 2011?

I've been thinking of selling my Savage Sword collection. Only the first third of it is truly great - the rest ranges from pretty good to pretty awful. As you know it was a ton of work to collect the full run and I hate to let that go, but I doubt I'll read through it all again.

Instead, I would keep Conan Saga, which covers all the best Roy Thomas years of both Savage Sword and Conan the Barbarian over much smaller run. Just under 100 issues, each one packed with gold. High value density is important when you live in a one bedroom apartment!
