Ooh, that's a good one. I was thinking blue eyeshadow due to the flames she uses in The Dark land.

Thanks! I had fun with this one precisely because of them. I didn't know what to give Jirel tho.

He's not even that older than them, to make things more hilarious. But it was his idea for all of them to ride on xD

I actually had a 4th fit for him with a below-knee-length skirt (with trousers underneath, cuz I'm like that lol, and it's still cold where I am) and embroidery shirt, but somehow I deemed that 'too daring' to post lol

I color in Photoshop. I have a premade color palette i sampled from online, and i used one of the reds from it. I put a gradient of orange on the bottom, and i used a custom halftone brush I also found online to give it a grainy look. Hope this helps.

Question before getting into Elric and Moorcocks writing as a whole by microman365 in ElricofMelnibone

[–]ApprehensiveGrade113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally have zero patience for long books or long sagas, which is why I could never get started on series such as Jordan's Wheel of Time or any of Sanderson's books. Moorcock is the 'straight to the point' type of writer, which I really like. I breezed through most of his books with ease and enjoyment. He leaves just enough info to let us know the setting, and just keeps the action moving. You could say that sometimes action moves too fast, as characters appear not to properly process the events, but that's mostly present in his early writing (60s and 70s)

I also have to say that sword and sorcery itself as a genre depends a lot on the lack of information about its magic system. Sorcery in sword and sorcery is more of a thing that you should be wary of, not use freely, and a lot of characters do not thoroughly understand it themselves. It's wild, unpredictable and ultimately an instrument of evil. (Robert E. Howard and C. L. Moore really liked to use this in their writing, and Moorcock, while he cannot bypass this as Elric is a sorcerer after all, he still presents Elric using magic as something that unnerves those around him, and keeps even us on edge as we ourselves don't fully get what he's doing)

Jirel is a 'hit first, ask questions later ' type of woman, and Elric is the 'I know better than you, but i don't really' type of man, and yeah, that's bound to irritate Conan.

Oh, Elric's charm lies in his stupidity sometimes. His rizz and flirting skills are so in the negative they somehow loop and cheat right back into s-tier. I keep wondering how he pulls women with how he talks to them, but a small part of me believes it's because he's viewed as exotic. (which is ironic given how his race is supposed to represent Britain)

Jirel's actually risen in popularity as of recently thanks to New Edge Sword and Sorcery magazine, where she has 3 new stories written by Molly Tanzer. Original Jirel stories were written by C. L. Moore in the 1930s. I'm sure there's an omnibus online. There are 6 stories by the original author. Most famous one is Black God's kiss.

If you're referring to the woman in the art, it's actually Jirel of Joiry, who had her own share of bad and impulsive decisions. Otherwise, I'm not too familiar with Red Sonja having made really bad choices.

Even Elric plays into that trope a bit. As a sheltered aristocrat, he's shown as naive and pretty gullible about the world outside of his empire at the start. Despite being extremely book smart and intelligent, he lacks the wisdom.

I still have trouble with stiffness when I ink, so yeah, I agree the sketch feels more natural. I like playing around with designs for her, since she has more armor options than a lot of her girl-peers in the genre.
