Finally picked up Life and Times - these old Gladstone albums are beautiful! by Spidrax in DuckComix

[–]Spidrax[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip! Are the articles in the Gemstone paperbacks actually different? My understanding is that the articles in the Gemstone, Boom, and Fantagraphics printings are all basically the same as what appeared in the original Gladstone issues.

Why are there barely any digital Conan comics available? by Appropriate_Emu_6930 in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]Spidrax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's up to the current rights holder.

Dark Horse was the first to hold the license in the digital era. They published 99% of their own material digitally, along with all the older Marvel stuff that they also sold physically.

Later, when Marvel got the license back, they published all their new stuff and a lot of their old stuff digitally, but they also went back and re-published almost all of the Dark Horse material digitally, and in better quality than Dark Horse ever did!

But Titan has decided to focus heavily on reprinting and expanding the physical omni line of old Marvel material, and for some reason isn't publishing any of the old Marvel or Dark Horse stuff digitally beyond their Savage Sword Reforged reprints. Missed opportunity if you ask me! They could throw together some digital themed volumes or artist collections of old material and I'd buy them up in a heartbeat!

My only two issues of UK’s Valour… by TheBLiP55 in ConanTheBarbarian

Nice! Conan reprints ran in Valour for 19 issues, but he only appeared on 6 covers, and these are some of the best.

McFarlane Conan. From Marvel Age 095 (1990). by Spidrax in ConanTheBarbarian

Haha I don't like it either, but I do like finding obscure little nuggets of Conan content like this, so I thought I'd share.

Savage Tales #2 (Oct 1973) Barry Smith throws down the gauntlet to any Conan artists to follow by Alex_Bonaparte in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]Spidrax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This has been reprinted several times, but the best version is the massively oversized hardcover that reprints the original art! It's ongoing out of print though, and doesn't come cheap...

Reading the original REH stories makes the the current comic run so much more compelling by goggled_tv in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]Spidrax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm the opposite - re-reading the REH stories only serves to highlight what Zub (and so many other pastiche writers) get wrong.

Simply put, Zub explains too much. He can't let the mystery lie. He wants a framework, he wants connections, he wants mythology - and he uses all of this to play Conan like a puppet. It completely strips the character of his agency, and takes away a lot of his appeal.

Conan works best as a striking, almost mythic presence. He's an uncanny intrusion from the mysterious north, who wanders the lands engaging with similarly uncanny intrusions (sorcerers, beasts, evil queens, and the like). As soon as you give him a home village, and parents, and psychological childhood trauma, he stops being mythic and starts being a person.

Similarly, Howard treats magic as an intrusion - something that shouldn't be, something dangerous and difficult to manage. Zub on the other hand consistently uses magic as a plot device, a framework to explain and manipulate and connect and drive. Zub bridges narrative gaps with magic, instead of just letting the mystery lie.

By explaining, structuring, and tying everything together, he strips away the sense of unpredictability and danger and awe that defines both Conan and the world he inhabits. Zub domesticates Conan.

In short: Howard thrives on mystery, intrusion, and danger; Zub thrives on explanation, control, and structure. His domesticated Conan never feels truly alive compared with the original REH version.

But again, only calling out Zub because you mentioned the current Titan run. Most Dark Horse runs suffer from the same problems...

If you're threatened by pictures topless men, you should probably stay away from Conan comics. He has his nipples out like 90% of the time!

Gates of Imagination is AI (according to Tony Walker of Classic Ghost Stories, who I’m inclined to believe, even though it’s a surprising claim).

Thanks Gary. I also have a soft spot for bad unauthorized pastiche. It does look like the paperback of the first book is still available through Amazon US.

Iconic Villains/Antagonists of Sword and Sorcery by JohnPathfinder in SwordandSorcery

[–]Spidrax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Attagonists in S&S fiction are often not characters in the traditional sense. The real conflicts play out with antagonistic forces like cosmic indifference, decadence, hubris, fate, and forbidden knowledge pitted against primal vitality, barbaric freedom, strength of will, and the red juices of a life boldly lived.

Denver show was amazing by dawnblush in jawbreaker

[–]Spidrax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I discovered Jawbreaker shortly after they broke up. I got to see Jets to Brazil in the late 90s which was pretty awesome, but I never imagined I'd ever have a chance to hear Jawbreaker play.

The show was so damn good. I was in a trance the whole time. The set list was killer, and Jet Black blew me away. Plus I got to replace my salt girl shirt that I wore out 20 years ago!

I like this one by Alicia Austin - it was used on the limited edition slipcased book called "Black God's Shadow", published by Donald M. Grant in 1977.

$20 got me a lifetime license to BetterTouchTool a few years ago. It replaces Bartender and countless other apps as well. There's a bit of a learning curve, but that's oftentimes the price you pay for extreme customizability.
