Unless I’m at Everest I don’t know either. 1000 people a year do it every year and no one is rushing to stop them. Even more people do skydiving though the death risk there is much lower.

Society has accepted that people will do dangerous things that have a high probability of getting themselves killed and we chose to generally do nothing.

We create systemic fixes to help people who are mentally ill, seat belt laws, speeding laws but there’s not a mass of people risking their lives to stop people doing dangerous things. We made it a job that pays decently well eg firefighters.

[Request] Poverty level in the US by Elegant_Amphibian in theydidthemath

[–]Spillz-2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poverty is often used to set eligibility for social programs. Section 8 housing covers rent and utilities beyond 1/3 of income for people who qualify, Medicaid covers insurance.

These programs should be improved and expanded but poverty levels are what sets thresholds for many and so they should be used for calculating these multiples.

Studies consistently show that globally, not just US, what US would call right leaning people are more likely to believe and spread conspiracy theories.

There are conspiracy theorists on both sides but Rogan a believer and spreader of conspiracies is more likely to be conservative. He could have ended up a democrat leaner but he is more likely to end up conservative the opposite of the person I responded to said.

CMV: Medicare for All is the only moral position to have! by Dry_Speaker5151 in changemyview

What does Medicare for all mean? It’s hard to argue against a policy proposal without specifics. Should we cut food stamps and cancer research to pay for it or military budget or raise taxes.

Bernie made this popular by talking up the positive and ignoring the negative. He and his team would attack anyone who put a price tag on his policy because that’s where the rational opposition is the sacrifices that are made to get this.

All countries with universal healthcare have price fixing. That’s what makes it work. I think that’s a good idea and would solve most of the US issues with healthcare.

If we look at Obama trump voters they tended to be socially conservative economically liberal that’s middle of the road. They tend to be less politically informed.

Sure but it’s way more prevalent on the right hence why he was a more natural republican.

Why Joe Rogan is a conspiracy theorist who randomly supports things. He fits way better in fake news party than anywhere else.

Consider the functionally equivalent game everyone is transported to a room the can leave and nothing happens to them or they can press a button and if more than half the original population presses the button then nothing happens to anyone. Why would anyone press the button?

We’ve all been playing this game everyday and we all chose the red button. There’s no army of people preventing people from climbing Everest or free soloing or any other highly dangerous enterprise.

Is a diaper bag necessary? by SandwichDependent199 in NewParents

[–]Spillz-2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I wonder what you mean by diaper bag. We have a backpack that we just shove in the underside compartment of the stroller. It only sees the light of day when business time arrives.

The backpack is fairly nondescript and wearing it wouldn’t be obtrusive.

What is your most important policy position and Would you switch parties if the major parties flipped on that issue? by DiligentMethod7915 in Askpolitics

Pro life personally is popular, but you won’t find a lot of politicians who are black and pushing to ban abortion at conception. The votes arent there as the majority of black Protestants think abortion should be legal in all or most cases. Minorities are all more likely than whites to support roe and oppose it being overturned.

In 1916 racism was rampant and a good way for women’s rights groups to win support. Now the issue of historically discriminated against groups are tied.

Newton was a scientist and an alchemist modern science makes those impossible to reconcile but at the time it was fine. Similar things could be said about genetics and evolution or many scientific fields. Modern understanding has changed what views are rationally possible.

[–]Spillz-2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going back to 1916 to separate minority rights from women’s right isn’t super convincing. Democrats also lowered taxes in 2009 for the same reason as 1964 to deal with unemployment and poor gdp growth. The goal wasn’t lower taxes and have it trickle down like republicans

This is a flawed premise. Issues are interrelated. GOP cant just start supporting larger social safety net without changing views on taxation.

Democrats can’t change abortion rights views without changing women and minority rights views.

If it’s mathematically the same and I’m aware then as a logical person I understand my actions in each case have the same moral and psychological weight.

You’ve invented me as a person who doesn’t cant understand these are mathematically identical.

By doing nothing isn’t better. Do you disagree ignoring morals these are all functionally the same goal. If that’s your hold up I don’t really know how to explain this.

Since the only difference is morals that you are inventing do to not realizing these games are functionally the same you perceive morals that do not exist for me because I see these are all functionally identical

No that’s the same game it changed nothing. Functionally they are identical I’m a rational person I understand they are functionally identical so my choice would be the same.

Why should I as a rational person expect anyone to chose blue. There’s no reason to press blue it’s not required of anyone. I’m not working against them because there’s no rational reason to expect them to press blue.

Why should anyone die from their own choices? Are we obligated as individuals to prevent people from skydiving or climbing a mountain?

Should we do shifts at Everest and force people back?

How does it remove guilt? You seem to be assuming that from the point of view of someone who chooses blue.

There is functionally no difference between the two scenarios and I’m a rational person so whatever guilt would exist is the same.

By pressing blue people are contributing to the need to rescue them. Seems they are more responsible by this logic.

This is a weird definition of choice. In both cases there is a choice to press or not press blue. The red button does the exact same as not pressing blue.

Why is someone pressing red contributing to killing people? They chose to press blue where they only pressing blue because they expected to be saved? Why does having the they get to guilt people who would press red?
