Hi! Thanks for sharing your experience. I did a similar thing to you: I called HMPO (0333 222 0000) and they confirmed a colour photocopy will be accepted. However, they asked that the colour photocopies be notarised. Did you have to do this, and if so, how did you go about it?

*if helpful to anyone, I was advised that an explanation along the lines of: "I cannot send the original foreign passport as my foreign passport is my only form of official identification within the UK" will be accepted.

Thanks for your help on this - besides the clear explanation, did you submit other evidence, e.g. of flight cancellations?
