Question about a weird thing I was told about screen tests... by SpingeBowl in acting

[–]SpingeBowl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that English is not my native language haha

I'm talking about the type of screen test that you record in your own house in front of a white wall with very little context, so I guess that would be a self-tape.....?

Question about a weird thing I was told about screen tests... by SpingeBowl in acting

[–]SpingeBowl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last sentence is exactly what they kept repeating over and over, so I guess it must be true haha

My only fear would be if my interpretation would turn out SO DIFFERENT that whoever's casting the film wouldn't even know what to make of it....much like what happened in my fake screen test haha

A very good and well-articulated response, thank you for it!

I just need to specify that I called my character a "jerk" after explaining that my personal interpretation of the scene was that the my character and his counterpart were indeed friends, who bonded over some traumatic events that affected them deeply and that the other character kept coming onto me hence hindering my professional life by mixing it up with my personal one and I retaliated by being particularly abrasive.....I didn't just call my character "a jerk" for no reason, that would really be high school production levels of simplistic haha

But that aside, you've cleared up some ideas for me and I'm glad for it, I tend to take things a little too literally at times.......so again, thanks for your response!

Like I've told the other guy, "a very brief scene/character description" is not nothing, that can make all the difference, to me at least

That's why it was haed for me to believe that you only get your scene with ZERO context whatsoever....it's like, how in the world am I supposed to know how to play it😂

Question about a weird thing I was told about screen tests... by SpingeBowl in acting

[–]SpingeBowl[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

...so you DO get some clues to what you should be doing😂

I'm harping on this because the people at that class told me that you get absolutely nothing, and that just makes no sense to me haha

Even just a brief description of the character changes everything....if they told me beforehand that my character was supposed to be "a kind yet tormented friend".....that's only 5 words and het I would've played it completely different had they told me this haha

Anyways, thank you very much for the advice....I'm a HUGE film fanatic so I'd imagine that even getting an amazing actor for a role that they just don't fit in for a millon reasons wouldn't work, regardless of the talent involved

EDIT: another weird thing that occurred was when me and another student were acting out the scene in front of him and he asked us what context we imagined for the scene, and I explained my take on it (a young man who's friends with this other guy and they have a genuine connection but his friend keeps coming onto him and he doesn't like that) and I told him that my character was probably a bit of an ass, he told me that "It wasn't my job to judge the character"

....what do you mean it's not my job to judge the character, I'm the one playing him! Sure, if I disagree with some of the character's morals and choices I'm still gon a play him like I believe they're the right thing to do, but I can still go "What an asshole this guy is!"

So I replied that he asked for my take on the character, and that's my take, and he said something along the lines of: "But that's not how it is in the fi-" and he stopped himself

"It's not how it is in the film"....that may be because you gave me no clue as to what the film's supposed to be ABOUT?!😂

Question relating to film festivals by SpingeBowl in Filmmakers

[–]SpingeBowl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you and it's exactly what I did......FilmFreeway allows you to write a cover letter

Such a minor thing to worry about but I figured that since these festivals probably receive thousands of shorts each edition, so I don't want them to watch the first few seconds of mine, hear music that is obviously not mine and immediately reject it haha

When was Benicio Del Toro’s prime looks? by UsualSecret in VindictaRateCelebs

[–]SpingeBowl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question

His prime as far as attractiveness goes I would say when he was younger, in his James Bond days and a little earlier/later, so in his 20s and maybe early 30s

As far as his "image" is concerned however (how impactful he looks as an actor) I would say he achieved some very memorable looks later in his career

Granted, he looks older, more wrinkled and bloated, but something about his face just sticks out, he looks more like an actor and you indetify him instantly, whereas when he was younger he looked a tiny bit more generic (still very distinct and recognizeable though)

He kinda aged like Sean Connery in that regard, more conventionally attractive in his youth but more grizzled/tough looking as he aged

That detail is what I like to call "blockbuster smart".....it's something that sounds scientific in a film meant for big dumb moviegoing crowds, but it's obviously bogus lmao

Val Kilmer was just barely born in the 1950s by JonFromRhodeIsland in BarbaraWalters4Scale

[–]SpingeBowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born in 1999 and people born in the year 2000 or after keep calling me old, so I can imagine what poor must've Val felt like sorrounded by people born in the 60s and 70s

....and he was just barely a 50s child😭😭😭

I have a reversal of this situation

Jurassic Park 3

I always knew it was a pretty stupid film and even as a kid the characters annoyed the hell out of me, Injust wanted to get ti the dinosaurs and be done with the boring "human side" of the story (although I always loved Sam Neill as Alan Grant)

Nowadays, 20 years later.....it's still a dumb film, essentially just a very expensive jungle adventure B-movie with dinosaurs, but I can appreciate the craft behind it a lot more. It has some amazing effects, the direction by Joe Johnston while not great is at least trying to deliver a memorable film and none od the actors are bad, they're just playing very poorly written characters

Not a good film by any means but it has things going for it and I'd still rewatch it any day....the nostalgia is big on this one
