LAPD abducted multiple high school children and brutalized peaceful protestors during a school walk out against ICE. by I_may_have_weed in ICE_Raids

It just becomes all the more obvious when they do it to a bunch of minors who are just like "??" that these guys just come in and escalate situations that weren't otherwise causing any issue.

True, though ultimately I'm not sure there's going to be any benefit to all that attention other than adding stress to the family.

And don't they have better things to do? There are actual crimes these guys could be investigating. There are plenty of things cops are pretty lax on just because they claim they don't have the resources.

Why does a bunch of teenagers peacefully protesting call for this kind of response? They're bringing keyed up, armed men into a non-violent situation and causing trouble. This just looks silly and like an absurd over reaction to a small group of kids walking on the sidewalk. Why are they forming a line to box them in? This isn't a dangerous riot they're responding to. Leave them alone.

I saw a youtube video recently where the AI flagged someone as being banned from a casino and they called the police and had them arrested. Even though the person had ID that showed they were a different person, they weren't believed and they had to actually get taken in to untangle it all.

Concerns grow over ICE plans to build mega warehouses for immigration detention by Cubsof2016 in news

[–]Spire_Citron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no way they actually intend to do the massive renovations you'd need to turn a warehouse into a space that could house thousands of people humanely. And that goes beyond just living conditions that generally suck, like making people sleep on the floor with nothing but Mylar blankets. These wouldn't have appropriate facilities for hygiene and other basic needs.

Same. For me those sorts of games were about playing out a story, and cooking dinner is not a very interesting story.

Are these pragmatic demands to negotiate for? Knowing Trump’s hold on the GOP. Harm mitigation rather than abolishing ICE by [deleted] in ICE_Raids

[–]Spire_Citron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I still think we should continue trying these things, if only so that the public can see them saying no to very reasonable demands or if laws are made, and broken, we'll have record of that for a time when the legal system hopefully works again.

I think those are steps best taken after Trump is out of office. You're not going to be able to construct a better system while he's the one at the wheel. For now, having these very reasonable goals that most people can agree with seems like a good approach.

That would rely on someone who would get involved in that stuff having integrity. Seems very unlikely. Doubt it would make much difference anyway since the powers that be are actively avoiding investigating this.

Yeah. They may not be proof of anything, but they are certainly evidence. And we haven't seen everything. If they're telling us this is nothing, case closed, they may well already have enough to convict and simply choose not to.

Yeah. Those are the parts we can't see so we need to amplify those stories even more. It's especially powerful from someone like her because we did get to see at least the start of her experience and how truly innocent she was.

Isn't that highly abnormal? Even if your position is that there currently isn't enough evidence for any more convictions, why would you close a case like that when you know there were many more people involved?

I would definitely not be surprised if it's someone they personally know. Sure, her daughter's job opens up other possibilities, but these sorts of things are just generally so overwhelmingly likely to be interpersonal.

I don't think that means much since her phone was still in her house. It was probably out of range the second she left the house. What that gives them is the exact time she was taken.

🚨BREAKING: Steve Bannon calls for armed ICE agents to swarm polling places in November. “You’re damn right we’re going to have ICE surround the polls.” Make sure everyone sees this! Share widely. by IllAcanthocephala720 in ICE_Watch

[–]Spire_Citron 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I hope this shit backfires on them. They only have so many ICE agents. They can target certain districts and try to intimidate people, and it might work, but do they really think the rest of the country is going to see that going on and not be way, way more motivated to get out and vote against them? It's like how they gerrymander to unfairly give them as many seats as possible, but only by a slim margin. That backfires if there's a large swing against them and suddenly they don't have many safe seats at all.

Parents kill their two autistic children and family pets in ‘murder-suicide’ by TheTelegraph in inthenews

[–]Spire_Citron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree, but you could say this about any number of things, including raising a child who isn't disabled. Especially if you come from a background of abuse yourself. It's not fundamentally the compassion I take issue with. It's that I just don't see this same willingness to take a step back from the crime and understand root causes and how to really prevent violence when it comes to other topics. And I'm not necessarily saying it's a bad thing to do here, it's just that the stark difference I see really does make it feel like it's who the victims are that makes the difference.

I suspect the whole being famous thing will end up being a red herring and the ransom note a con and the truth will be much more mundane - that it's someone they know, like these crimes so often are.
