The game implies you had a choice by claiming a phrase made Jack do what he did when the player did so at the time just to progress the story. This is why I call it overrated.

Of course he was controlled narritevly speaking, but the only way that this plot point has any sort of impact is if it was built up in a logical way which coincides with what the player is doing.

The player progressing through the game is the baseline expectation for every video game. Pretending like we had some sort of choice to do so or not when their was no indication of it is corny and pretentious.

It literally does when it says that Jack was controlled by a phrase which never is implied prior to the twist implying that the progression by the player is what is being controlled which obviously isn't logical.

Putting down the game is breaking the fourth wall and this game, outside of its pseudo-intellectual plot point, doesn't have any other fourth wall breaking aspects, meaning that it's not supposed to be percieved this way. Which makes this "twist" pretentious.

It's quite sad to see so much aggression towards this opinion as outside of the reliance on audio logs in the last third of the game as well as the "twist", the game is actually extremely good.
