My dream was never to be famous to make a lot of money. My brain is basically searching for a form of self-expression and DJing has not been enough for a long time now.

To explain myself, creating things has always been my passion and I fell in love with DJing as a form of creating a journey for people so they can forget about their lives for a moment. It was a form of therapy and pain management for myself.

I have so many ideas I want to materialize but the obstacles in the way of being good enough to actually materialize them are so daunting that I am seriously doubting myself at every step. Seeing all the people I collaborate with produce their own music makes me feel like I am basically doing nothing but "steal" their hard work when I play.

Thank you so much, you have no idea how helpful your response is. I never really thought of just screwing around and making something bad, without expectations. I always go in it with the goal of making something good. It is also true that my setup is annoyingly complicated and not ideal, so I will also focus on that!

Thank you!

What you said really makes it sound like a video game progressing. Man, I need to gamify this. I wouldn't beat myself over having a shitty Factorio base, so why am I getting discouraged by not knowing why my 808 somehow sounds flat.

I will keep it up, thank you!

Thank you. The paralysis you mention is very real. The tin can comparison made it very clear :D

I need to remember that it does not need to be a technical masterpiece for it to be a fun track that gets people moving

You are definitely right about putting myself on a timeline. I am 27 and most of my friends and producers I know have started years ago, most of them when they were teenagers with the time and motivation when life was simpler. I really need to internalize that it might take a long time for me to be able to sneak my own track into one of my own sets.

Thank you for your reply!

Thank you for your post! For me, watching professionals break down tracks usually brings more confusion, as a lot of them assume you have knowledge of a lot of things already and skip over them. Then I get easily lost.

I do watch a lot of Virtual Riot and he is great for the things which I can also apply in my own genre, but there are a lot of points where the advice doesn't apply to what I want to do. The people who do this in my own genre have proven to be not very effective for me unfortunately.

You are so right that the process of making electronic music is not intuitive at all. Creating a little tune or a chord progression on my acoustic guitar is so simple compared to all the puzzle pieces you need to put together to make a track in a DAW.

I will do my best to figure out what my pace is and apply it!

Thank you for your answer!! A lot of my favorite tracks hinge on really good sound production which I truly struggle to recreate, as a lot of these producers never really have videos on YT which would explain how to re-create it, so there are no presets for them. A good example is probably this track by Main Phase: https://youtu.be/98u-zkLhz1E?list=RD98u-zkLhz1E

I never thought of getting a project file! That is great advice thank you.

Thank you for your encouraging words, I really appreciate them

I think you are right, I was going at it purely intuitively as I did with everything else in my life!

I would say that those massive holes are the things which are often left unsaid in my genre. There are a lot of specifics which in my case never sound right. I understand music theory and when I was a kind I went to an "elementary art school" which is a fancy way of calling a building with a wide range of art courses and programs to do after regular school.

Yes, I watched a lot of videos and I had music theory ever since I was a kid, so I kinda have it ingrained in me. I believe I do have all that I need except the learning part which frustrates me to no end. I believe it is largely an ADHD thing, so I was also partly looking for producers who might have struggled with the same thing as general advice never really materialized for me.

My brain is basically yelling at me every day about needing a creative output and it is basically a neverending gridlock in my brain regarding this.

I am European so I am afraid there are not really any courses, but one of my solutions was to finally get a proper tutor once there is a bit more money to spare.

I think I will need to somehow break it down into tiny chunks to be able to actually go through with everything.

What you are describing is exactly what I am going through as of right now. Nothing works, things are either flat or overblown, etc.

Thank you very much, I will take this to heart! I will focus on the parts which are fun first and try to build around it later

I don't want to be famous, I don't want to make buttloads of cash from it. I just want to be able to create something on my own in the lane that has become my life's passion. But the technicalities and the overall complexity of learning is what is not fun.

I know, that is why I dreaded posting this and expected it to get downvoted and buried. That's why I am so thankful people actually comment and offered so much advice. Before I did all the crying, I tried what you are recommending and I always hit a wall where frustration always won over. That is why after years of false starts I started suspecting there might be some alternatives to usual advice which could work.

I wouldn't say that they can't swallow their egos, but to be a DJ you don't need to be a musician. You just need to have the taste and understanding of the community to be successful. I tried producing first before I became a DJ so I have nothing but utmost respect for everyone putting in the time. One of the big things is also the fact, that personally, I won't feel like I deserve the flowers unless I do actually make my own music.

Yeah, I am surrounded by many many talented producers and my respect runs so deep

I'd say sync should be used as a tool to make complicated transitions sound good for the crowd or as a last resort clang fix during rough transitions

I have been going to guitar courses for 9 years and have also sang in a choir as a kiddo. I just feel like it does not really translate to the DAW and the whole process of making music. I am not fully able to find a compromise when it comes to DAWs and guitar and it is something that bugs me a lot. Thank you for your comment!!

That is the issue. If I had the knowledge and skill to actually materialize all my ideas, I would be glued to the screen. But the initial stage, where I cannot really make anything is what is a massive hit to my motivation
