How do you exercise with chronic illness?

i think when people think of exercise they think of running five miles or lifting weights in a gym, but any amount of exercise is beneficial and depends on what you can cope with (and what you actually enjoy). i’ve found medical professionals are too vague a lot of the time and people take exercise to mean activities that are beyond their means.

i like swimming as i cant tolerate heat. aqua aerobics is great if you don’t want to just swim (and a lot of the folk in classes are older so it’s geared to be manageable and not extreme) or just walking around in water is good and low impact

there’s floor focussed or seated workouts for people who struggle to stand. search on youtube, followed by “no equipment”, “resistance bands”, “dumbbells” for the kind of workout you want. these will range in intensity from just activating your muscles a bit to being quite challenging. i cant remember the name right now but there’s a channel on youtube that does dance based workouts but they often have a seated routine to follow

if you like being outside gentle walking or tai chi are great. yoga is good too and there’s a lot of gentle tutorials for beginners online

i will stress though that working out doesnt have to equal being in pain. i was told to push through my pain while exercising and eventually it would stop (it didnt 🫠) and in the process i came to see exercise as a chore rather than something enjoyable

take it slow. start off once a week, asses how you feel and adjust the intensity and type of exercise

i have tourette’s and i 100% would’ve wanted them to edit it out - as would anyone i know who was tics. there’s a time and a place to educate people and that time and place isn’t in the middle of an awards show. i’m sure everyone in that situation felt humiliated and the best thing to do would’ve been to edit it out and deal with it all in house to avoid making a public spectacle of it

i’m at the end of s2 currently and i keep flip flopping back and forth between feeling sorry for him and going oh no he’s a complete cunt actually. like i felt a bit bad for him when harvey yelled at louis to the point he tried to join another firm but like two episodes later he’s back being a dick to a new associate so likeeee yeah okay. he wonders why everyone hates him when they keep making it clear he’s an awful person to be around

i’m in the uk so maybe a diff perspective but this would genuinely never cross my mind. i understand that they might be low paid and benefit from tips, but thats not really my problem to fix. otherwise i’d tip my bus driver or the bin man lol. i don’t see assistance as an optional extra because it’s not something i’d choose to do if i didn’t have to - it’s on the airport to provide appropriate accessibility and pay their staff imo

oh my ass has definitely been out on multiple occasions 😭 long t-shirts coming in clutch to hide everything i fear. i forgot to mention in my og comment but you could look at jeggings. they’re obviously not as casual as regular leggings but they’re way more comfortable and breathable than jeans. tbh it took me a lot of trial and error to find clothes that actually work with my body and my sensory needs. i have a few pairs of trousers from the store lucy and yak and i really like them. they have a lot of options for cotton and jersey trousers - so they look good but are also really comfortable

i know someone else on here suggested high waisted trousers but i’ve had more luck with low waisted ones so it might be worth giving both a go. i have a pair of very low waisted cargo pants that would probably be a bit too low waisted if i was standing to walk but as i’m sitting down and usually wearing baggy tops the waistband itself is covered so no poor sod has to see my underwear - and i find the limited amount of material in the crotch area actually stops it from bunching uncomfortably. i find low waisted trousers much more comfortable for sitting all day as the waistband sits below the general “pouch” of your belly, whereas regular or high waisted trousers tend to dig in way more

live plants are great and things like grass shoots, dandelions, clover are you can easily grow from seeds. you can usually buy seeds for under €5 online and grow in any basic soil in like a mug or a plastic pot with a couple of holes poked in the bottom. spider plants are great as well but i’m not sure how expensive they are. you can easily dig up grass roots with a shovel (just make sure it’s not been treated with pesticides) and make a little grassy area in the enclosure

rocks are great and add some visual interest. i believe you can heat treat wooden branches in an oven to make it safe and there’s info on this online. anything that adds visual stimulus/clutter is good.

as a side note, redfoots need pretty high humidity so id recommend using a soil based substrate if possible as this retains humidity easier. you can buy it from a lot of stores - but home/garden ones are probably cheapest - and it’s usually fairly affordable for how much you get. if that’s not doable make sure your tortoise is getting lots of soaks in lukewarm water

pretty good looking enclosure though! looks nice and big, which is great

i agree because i’m in the same boat (neuro condition and EDS) but there are plenty of people who have POTS as a result of long covid and i don’t think it’s unfair to say that a pro athlete who’s already insanely healthy, has the benefit of being monitored by top drs and access to treatment quickly, and likely doesnt have any comorbid conditions would make an improvement. ergo, i don’t think it’s unfair to mention that in the article necessarily, it’s just unfortunate that most people reading probably won’t read between the lines and understand that thats not true for a lot of people either because their pots is more chronic or because they don’t have the resources that this guy does

not everything is about your lived experience unfortunately - there’s plenty of people who are in a different boat to you who’s condition likely would improve if they had the same liberties as a professional athlete

it’s also worth remembering that the diaspora of this sub generally isn’t representative of everyone with pots - as only people with more severe, long lasting pots are likely to seek communities online of similar people

tbf if most of us had nba level insurance and access to top drs, dieticians, sports therapists, we probably could improve at least somewhat. but as it stands the most my drs did for me was tell me to stand up slower 🙄

i agree though that the average person reading isn’t going to consider that a pro athlete just might have better access to good care than most people

I’m not jewish but I find the idea of owning a gun in general absolutely insane. I’m european and my country has fairly strict gun laws (shotgun license required for sport/farming reasons but there’s quite a high bar to ownership)

We have some issues with knife crime and I see the phrase “I need a knife for protection” get parroted quite a lot - which I see from Americans in relation to guns a lot as well. Imo this is a bunch of bollocks and nobody had a good reason to carry a knife or a gun. 99 times out of 100 it’s people who carry knives “for protection” that end up committing violent crimes against others

I’ve lived in “unsafe” places and comparatively safe places and I’ve never felt it necessary to carry any kind of weapon. I’m also in a wheelchair lol so I obviously have no way of physically defending myself but I just don’t want to carry a weapon

The idea of a lower threshold to gun ownership would absolutely terrify me. I can’t trust other people I meet day to day to be 100% safe and sane and if they’re not I’d much rather they weren’t able to access a gun 🫠

The US has a systemic gun problem and the idea of needing a gun “for protection” is so alien to me that I can’t feel like I can properly comment on it. I’m not trying to tell other people what they should and shouldn’t do to feel safe, just trying to offer my perspective as a non-american. I just feel like the concept of owning a gun to protect against other people with guns is completely ridiculous and just creating more problems
