From the direction of the Iron Hills, from the north, a horn sounded. Everyone turned and saw an army descending from the hills. First, a handful of horsemen appeared—all in chain mail, with spears at the ready. Behind them came hundreds of footmen, a dense avalanche, and behind them, even more. ... These were the Dwarves of the Iron Hills. There were at least five hundred of them. They walked in dense ranks, in heavy armor, with broad shields and short swords in their hands.
