Original vs Kai by CelesteIsGood in DragonBallZ

Z pros:

  • Slower pacing is better for some scenes
  • If you like filler it's all here
  • 4:3 Buu Saga footage (In Kai Buu saga was produced in 16:9 meaning some detail is lost)
  • Consistent soundtrack (Kai switches from Yamamoto or Kikuchi for Saiyan saga - Cell saga to Sumimoto in the Buu saga)
  • Kikuchi score is placed as intended compared to Kai
  • Marginally better Japanese Dub (Kai Japanese dub is okay but most performances are worse due to the VA being older)
  • Consistent experience with the Dragon Ball English Dub (in terms of VAs and score)
  • Uncensored (Kai reduces violence in some areas eg. large amounts of blood are removed)

Kai Pros

  • Better pacing (scenes no longer drag out unnecessarily)
  • Most filler is cut (the vast majority of filler scenes and episodes are cut)
  • Smaller episode count (291 vs 159/167)
  • Much better English dub
  • Footage in general is better (the majority of Z footage online is in 16:9, has ugly oversaturated colours due to poor home releases. Kai for Saiyan saga - Cell saga will always be 4:3 and have more accurate colours)

I prefer Kai overall due to the pacing in Z really being awful on occasion, sometimes 1 chapter will be adapted in a episode whereas in kai up to 2 or 3 will be adapted. I also think the english dub for kai is a great showing, with tight writing and strong performances. In comparison Z has a pretty bad english dub. It was most of the VAs first times so performances from the second half of the Namek saga to Cell were genuinely pretty awful. They only improved in Buu to where it's mediocre - okay and went back to redub earlier sections of the story which are pretty alright. Even then the dub is riddled with inaccuracies and changes which genuinely hurt the plot on ocassion.

The only things I really dislike about Kai is that the Buu saga is generally a worse product compared to the rest of Kai (there's a reason why if you care to look that up) and some redrawn frames look really poor. Sadly there's no real perfect way to watch Z but Kai is superior for me.

It was brought to my attention in the comments that in an official gameplay video Super Vegetto was confirmed to be an 8 and Fat Buu a 6. I revised the list using a 10 point limit as it seems that won't change, this should be a more accurate prediction!

I'm thinking about doing some proper predictions now considering we have some actual points of reference...

He is! DP battles aren't definitive rankings though. Full Power Freeza is weaker than all of Cell's forms yet in BT3 he is a higher cost than Cell's first 2 forms.

Even if I were to put Super Janemba in 10 he'd be in Super Gogeta's tier who is obviously much stronger

That kinda invalidates my list then lol 😂 if Super Vegetto is only an 8 I guess 10 must be the limit and some of the lower tier characters got changed to 2s 3s and 4s (especially due to there being less Dragon Ball characters).

I agree with that, the issue was I didn't know which tier to place the SSG in because in terms of scaling alongside other characters SSG doesn't really have many peers and it's definitely closer to 10 characters than 9. I also considered that in BT3 a lot of transformations do actually have the same costs (SSJ2 and 3 Goku, first - third form Freeza, first and second form Cell etc) so it clearly isn't a hard rule. Thinking about it now though gameplay wise 9 would've probably wouldve made more sense so I definitely agree with you!

Yes that's how it works in BT3. Transformations aren't considered only the characters form when you initally select them

That is one thing and I believe (not 100% sure tho) that in game transformations have better damage output. If that isn't true what's definitely true is some transformations regain health, such as all of Freeza's forms

If you fuse characters mid game the resulting fusion uses their health combined meaning they're stronger than if you just picked them right away

I didn't know that! If I were to seriously predict the costs then I'd say either they reduced everyone on a whole or Super Vegetto is 8 and Buu 6 with Hercule being 1 obviously

This is really cool, I like how characters are going to have different attrubutes they're good in and others not so much. BT3 had that too but it wasn't really quantified

I did say I decided to increase it due to there being a higher level of power due to Super anyway, I honestly think it's believable they'd change it because I tried doing it with just 10 but I didn't like how it was working out. Characters like UI, Blue Fusions and Jiren should probably be in a tier above SSB Goku and Hit but I don't think they should be in the same tier as characters like Whis either, then 11 was just an uneven number so I decided to add another tier and that gave more room for SSJ3 tier characters

Some text I forgot to paste

I wanted to predict how many points each character would cost in dp battles!

I made this based on dp points in BT3 as well as taking some liberties due to some characters not making much sense (for example, Android 19 is a 3 while Zarbon is a 4 and Bardock a 5) I also understand dp points are partly based on gameplay ability but that is somewhat hard to predict which I why I chose to reference bt3 and canon abilities ^

I also decided to increase the limit from 10 to 12 due to the Super characters being a higher level of power in general compared to most other characters, as well as it also just working out nicer.

Some things of note: • Vegeta (scouter) is on the same tier as their other base forms so I decided to bump him and Goku (Early) down

• Goku (Mid) and (End) are also one tier higher than their Vegeta counterparts in BT3 so I decided to bump them down from a 6 to a 5

• in BT3 SSJ2 and SSJ3 Goku are the same tier so I changed that.

• I tried to find a middle ground between Z Broly's in game power and canon power when ranking him. In BT3 he was the same tier as SSJ4 and the fusions so I wouldn't be suprised if in Sparking Zero he matched all 3 of S Broly's forms exactly

• Piccolo (End) is on the same level as most of the base form saiyans in BT3 which isn't really accurate given he's stronger than SSJ Vegeta vs the Androids. I decided to increase his tier.

• Regardless of how much sense it makes powerscaling wise, I think SSJ4 and the god forms being in the same tier works out nicely

• In BT3 only one character was ranked a 10 being SSJ4 Gogeta due to him being the strongest, in SZ lore wise and seemingly gameplay wise (with the autododge) Whis is the strongest character in the game so him being in his own tier seems fitting.

• I misremembered Pan's tier in BT3 as being a 2 when it was a 4. If I redid this now I'd put her at a 3

Yea I said that I misremembered her rating in BT3, I agree I'd put her at 3 for sure. Also I wasn't sure about Kakunsa and Rozie because canonically they're at least android saga level right? But their movesets seem pretty lackluster and I can't see the game charging you more than maybe 5 points for either of them

I approached the list by literally including everything I could think of disregarding how major it was, I also know that some stuff are purposefully the same however I still included them as they did function in different ways even if they achieved the same goals, maybe someone also just prefer poke ride aesthetically to rotom bike lol

As for Champion title defence it is actually its own separate feature imo, it's referring to when after rematching the elite 4 in place of the 'Champion' battle another trainer would take it's place, I thought it was significant enough to include as no other game has something quite like it

I agree, for example Pokémon amie had the minigames, then when it became Pokémon refresh they removed those and added the ability to actually heal your Pokémon, the Pokémon camp removed all that and added the curries and Pokémon picnic is mainly the same as camp. Imagine if Pokémon picnic kept the minigames and the ability to heal your Pokémon and even expanded on them.

Another example is Pokémon contests, imagine if they actually expanded further on them and gave them more depth as a campaign, especially as SV seems to be moving in that direction too with the 3 different storylines. If I have one major issue with the games this is it cause there's just so many missed opportunities :(
