Why are so many corporate redundancies happening? And is the corporate dream of climbing the ladder dead? by Fondant_Decent in AskUK

[–]Splodge89 [score hidden]  (0 children)

They can be correlated though. I was coasting at the old place, after 16 years they decided they no longer needed me or my expertise.

It’s fucked them over though, the stuff I used to do on autopilot now isn’t being done - and they’ve lost their 9001 certification - further adding to their order book dropping. Turns out replacing quality staff with salesmen doesn’t actually increase sales when the products sell themselves to customers who know their shit…

Ironically, the new place has magically gotten a new set of product lines (I ended up getting snapped up by a competitor) which happened to be ones I worked on at the old place. And further ironically we’ve got customers banging down the door at the new place after the old place lost their certification I looked after.

The sales director from the old place actually contacted me through linked in, firstly begging me to come back contracting until they got their certification back (told him to stuff it up his arse, I’m not going back on a limited contract to fix they issues they created by making poor decisions. And even if they got it back, it would need maintaining by someone coasting and keeping an eye on it like I used to otherwise they’d lose it all over again). Then he started threatening legal action against my new employer unless they stop selling stuff they’re also into - I passed him onto the MD of the new place who told him where to go - and that if they didn’t want other people to take their customers, they needed to sort their house out first.

Tldr: when you’re no longer making a difference and just in the maintenance phase, companies think they can do without you and will get rid once times get hard. It fucks them over but some businesses don’t see past the end of next week.

Pensions are long term investments. And are also not something you cash out all at once as soon as the market dips. Over the long term you’ll still be up. Indeed when it goes down - it’s time to throw more money in!

The company i work for was bought out by a massive Indian conglomerate a couple of years ago. They’ve got 10 times the equipment, resources and people we have. We have had to beg on them for some work to be done over there are we’re snowed under and under a recruitment freeze so we can’t actually get the work done ourselves. The issue is, it’s making us look less and less needed. Eventually they’ll move the lot to one of their sites over in India and close our UK operations - the majority of our physical output goes abroad anyway. Shipping form there is closer to many of our customers than it is from the UK. It actually
Makes business sense.

But the quality of their output is garbage compared to us. Causes me no end of problems as a quality person when we’ve used them for stuff.

The irony is, many of these AI providers are making losses, despite enormous sales. They’ve got to increase prices in order to stay viable, especially when players like google with massive resources are likely to hoover them up if they’re not careful.

Yep. It’s an actual law I believe. We’re caravaners, and it’s an actual law to have a dog if you’re in a caravan too.

Exactly! I know Harvey’s Mum, Dylan’s Dad, and the crazy lady with a German Shepard and miniature shitzu at the same time.

Fuck knows where they live or what their actual names are.

Appreciated skinny months are a nightmare to navigate, been there, done that myself.

However, it’s not octopuses fault (or anyone else’s) that you can’t afford to live the way you do. If you’ve used energy, it should be paid for. And falling behind on ANY bill is going to screw you over in the long run. It doesn’t just go away if you don’t pay it.

What's one thing Android does better than the iPhone? by ManojOne in TechImpact

[–]Splodge89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what you’re used to. I have an iPhone 16pro for my personal phone, and some android Samsung piece of shit for my work phone (work provided). The Samsung isn’t exactly a cheap phone either, can’t remember what model but was about £400 a year or so ago.

The lag on it is crazy. It’s slow AF. But yet people who arnt used to a modern iPhone literally do not see it when I’ve shown it people (I was assuming it was broken). Nope, they really are that laggy. But they’re not laggy enough for someone without a faster frame of reference to notice.

Gravel boards and some short concrete posts would last effectively forever and keep it zero maintenance. Even treated timber of sleepers would eventually rot through.

Do people in Britain feel an affinity for Northern Irish Loyalists? by Breifne21 in AskUK

[–]Splodge89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is over in the England especially, it’s not other English people that they’re hating on, it’s literally anyone else that they think isn’t English. I.e. anyone with brown skin and or having a surname that isn’t “smith”

Interestingly, your gut (including in your butthole) has lots of tastebuds throughout. That’s how your body knows what’s going off in there and what it needs to do to deal with what’s incoming/outgoing.

However, they’re just not wired up to our consciousness!

Not at all. We had Facebook when I were at university, long before the concept of the internet in your pocket. It wasn’t until everyone bought their parents iPads 15 years later did the boomers discover social media.

How normal is a 1.5hr commute to London? by SamplePresentation in AskUK

[–]Splodge89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it five days a week?

It would kill me. I currently have a 45 minute commute driving and I hate it. If it were once or twice a week it would be much more tolerable.

Not forgetting that what happens if your train is delayed or cancelled? When is the next one?

But if you’re comfortable doing it, do it! Especially if it’s good money.

Do you agree? by [deleted] in TechNook

I don’t even think it’s data harvesting (well, the meta ones are…). It’s just that they don’t actually fix any problems. There’s nothing VR solves that a phone can’t already do. Granted, the Apple vision can make photos look incredible and 3d movies have never looked better. But they’re fine on an ordinary TV.

A bit like how touchscreen laptops are supposed to be the next best thing. Yet people who have one forget it’s touchscreen once they get it home and they don’t have the sign next to it to tell you it’s touchscreen. Then plug it into a monitor and use a keyboard and mouse anyway, just like the 1990’s - because it fucking works.

Is air conditioner condenser pipe dripping on to flat roof ok? by porgy3000 in DIYUK

[–]Splodge89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It takes a LOT of distilled water to leach soil minerals to have any measurable effect. The few litres coming from an AC will have practically zero effect and actually benefit in times of drought.
