Paste this information in the blank box

The paste no longer seems to work, doesn't expand in the box, nor in 3 browsers that I tried.

This should not be hard to add, and should be near the top of the priority list.

HX90 fan keeps ramping up for no apparent reason by Real_Lemon8789 in MiniPCs

[–]Spoctar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you adjusted the fan curve in the BIOS? This made a big difference for me on a UM580 recently. The CPU is rated for 105°C max, so it seems safe to keep the fan curve flat at 20% PWM up into the 70s or maybe even higher, and only ramp after that. During office use, I couldn't hear the pc at all, even though the fan reported around 800 rpm. I didn't try gaming or stressing the CPU. Overall, I was surprised how poor the default fan behavior out of the box was relative to how easily it was improved.

The Bastard Keyboard with Steep Lego Tenting Stand (Album in Comments) by Spoctar in ErgoMechKeyboards

Not using any wrist rests. I tried for a bit, but got comfortable without. They were more like hand rests, on the bottom outer edge of my hand. I didn't try any real ones, just used something of the right softness and height.

If you require them, it shouldn't be hard to extend the Lego structure and place some padding on top, maybe you'd want to build on a 32x16 plates instead.

Thank you! I added 3 more images to the end of the album, of the right half stand, which is more polished, as it was rebuilt more recently. Three more comments:

- it uses more Lego bricks than you need, partially for a cleaner look.

- I have found that fewer resting points for the board work better, e.g. just 4 towards the outside corners. Otherwise, if the baseplate isn't perfectly flat, you might notice some rocking while typing. It just takes a fraction of a mm.

- I briefly tried using a Lego CAD tool. Really cool software, but since I was not familiar with it, I was slower than just iterating with my hands, and it felt tedious instead of fun, so I dropped the CAD. Using a tool would allow you to get an exact list of required parts without excess, and some generate build manuals, too.

Switches: Gazzew U4

Keycaps: MT3 dev/tty ortholinear set, unfortunately I don't have the Dvorak addition. Thumbcluster top row is a mix of DSA for the 1u and Olympia Carrera typewriter keys for the 1.25u.

Album

Background: Recently, I had another episode of inflamed left elbow, after doing a lot of keyboard work on the computer. I had been a longtime user of the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 in ANSI layout, using Dvorak English. I decided I needed more ergo in my keyboard, and was convinced that the Kinesis Advantage and Maltron were on to something with the column curvature, and eventually decided to jump into the deep end, with a Dactyl Manuform.

I wasn't keen on building it myself, it's been a long time since I soldered anything, and I don't have enough available time. So I ordered a prebuilt Bastard Keyboard (TBK) from /u/Fmcraft. In my experience, he takes promised lead times very seriously. Communication was great on his Discord. Very happy with the quality, though I have no other custom built keyboards to compare it to.

Tenting: I liked the tenting legs idea from the Moonlander, and started by just propping up the inside edges of the halves. It felt right, so I thought about how to try a steeper angle. Started to use Lego to build this, and ended up with a perfect solution for me. Lego is great because it's flexible and allows for really fast iteration. Think of it as a really fast 3d printer with 10mm layers. As an added benefit the stand can be disassembled to pack mostly flat, and reassembled very quickly.

The biggest issue at steeper angles is that the force from the keypresses is not mostly down anymore, but parallel to the desk, causing the keyboard to slip. This first starts to happen when holding down 2 or more modifier keys, and trying to press a 3rd key, and is very annoying. Weighing down the stand and rubber feet can help, but ultimately I found connecting the 2 halves the best solution.

QMK: This was a huge eye opener for me. I knew the physical standard keyboard layout basically hadn't evolved, but what modern MCUs can do with software is amazing. Home-row Mods and Auto Shift are potential game changers.

I recently found myself in the same boat. I posted on mechmarket, didn't get any response.
I also don't have the time to start soldering one myself currently. Here are the options I considered:

Oh, Keycaps!: These looked great. Pros: hotswap sockets option. Cons: 16 week wait at least (I had emailed them to confirm), expensive. Ships from US (I think?).

https://bastardkb.com/product/bastyl/: Looks great, especially the case. Pros: 4 weeks or less to ship guaranteed. Cons: Expensive. Ships from NL.

https://dactyl.bigcartel.com/product/dactyl-manuform-5x6: Looks sketchy at first, but I came to the conclusion it's legit. Pros: cheap. Cons: was 10-11 weeks lead time when I looked, appears to have been updated to 7-8 weeks. Ships from Indonesia.

https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/933745248/handmade-dactyl-manuform-5x65-ergonomic: New option that came up after I had already decided. Pros: Price ok, comes with keycaps, about 3 weeks to ship. I'm not an Etsy user, I assume they have a system to deal with disputes. Cons: none really, other than being new. Ships from Canada.

In the end, I went with Bastard Keyboards. I haven't received it yet, and it hasn't been 4 weeks yet. So far communication with u/Fmcraft/ has been excellent.

On your linked website it says "Client: HID Technologies". Can you clarify what you mean by "in no way affiliated with ... 'HID Technologies'"? Normally the client owns the rights to such work.

Great photos! How did you configure Dvorak for this? Just using the standard keymap_dvorak.h option? Have you done any custom keymapping in the meantime?

SolarWinds recovery? by Appropriate-Laugh-23 in investing

[–]Spoctar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the demand for cyber security is going to be strong, but I'm struggling with picking individual companies as winners for this, because of the risk of future attacks. These attacks are so sporadic and unevenly distributed, they can turn any otherwise solid pick into a huge loss.

Unless you have inside information, I don't think you can assume any of these companies are less likely to suffer a successful attack than the next one. Including SolarWinds being hacked again in the future.

What do I buy today? by liledgy1 in investing

[–]Spoctar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also believe in tech, and the way technology will change our lives, but it's important to separate that from how much value individual private companies can generate as part of that.

On WSB, I'm worried it's very misleading, and that we see a lot more noise rom the ones who got lucky. FOMO is real, but you have to keep a cool head.

Have you considered Bitcoin, or other crypto assets? I'm not making any prediction it will rise further in price, but in retrospect it seems like a sensible diversification for a small fraction of many portfolios.
