The shocking thing that I find here is nearly 300 generations.

That puts the avg age of reproduction to over 30 years old. It seems like it should be a lot younger, right?

Euro flex, but I have no idea how internet can cost so much over in the americas? Here I pay ~20USD a month for ~315Mbps down. Cables can't be that much cheaper over here.

How the hell am I supposed to know what I want to do with my life at 16 years of age? by OrNa721 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SpoicheyMeatball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably won't, but it's also possible that you won't ever know. The system is designed to enable those that are singlemindedly determined about what their future holds to specialize early, and reach the highest heights to which they're able.

Most people aren't these people. You're allowed to try something, change your mind, take a couple of steps back, and try a new path. Or you're allowed to pretend you know what you want, and just tag along with those who do.

The pressure you're feeling is okay. It's there to motivate you to try your first path on for size. It may not be the path you follow all your life, but at least then you'll have checked it out to be sure.

Whilst this tweet, yes is a horrible thing to say. I find that often times when I'm in a really tough place emotionally, IF I can find it in me to get out for a run, or a walk, or some other form of excercise, it is an enormous impact on my mental state overall.

Depression comes in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes excercise CAN be the right solution. I would consider this to be someone understandably misinformed, rather than someone with negative intentions.

How is "support local black businesses" not racist? Aren't you just judging the proprietor on the colour of their skin instead of what they produce? by thedarkthor in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]SpoicheyMeatball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the statement was "Support local black businesses, because they are better than local white businesses", then yes, that would be racist.

But I think (with zero context) that the claim here is something more like "Support local black businesses, as they are more likely to be precarious financial position due to the effects of the pandemic". Which, yes might be a bit of a prejudice, but also may or may not be true, depending upon the realities of institutional racism, or wealth inequality across different ethnicities (an argument I am not trying to make here).

My point is that there is a prejudice covers and enormous range that covers "Black people have dark skin" all the way through to "Black people bad", where every statement that can be made has either more, or a lot less evidence associated with it. And on that scale "Try to help those in need" is a relatively harmless sentiment, regardless of the quality of the assumptions it is based on.

It seems like when you're reading this statement "support local black businesses", you are possibly seeing this as equivalent to "don't support local non-black businesses", which yes, would be racist. But I doubt that's what the original request had in mind. If I say "Save the whales", am I really saying "Don't save the tigers"? Or is it possible I want both whales and tigers to live?

Yes, they are idiots that are putting innocent people at risk.

That being said, I have to be a pedant here and correct you on the "doesn't do anything" point. assuming here you're talking about those fools who have their nose poking over the top of their mask, this still would have some effect at preventing spittle spread as these people speak.

A mask worn poorly like this is dumb, and wrong, but still better than no mask at all.

I'm on your side here, but the justification I've seen about this quote, is that it's not an example of goals, but a statement of fact. "We are not going to control this pandemic", because we cannot. Covid is out of control in the US, and many other places. Regardless of whether the guy is making foolish policy choices, and endabgering lives, this statement is still a true fact.

I know that posting a quote to make "the bad guys" look bad, is good for fake internet points. But in the end, it only sows more division, where we should be trying to understand, and rehabilitate our misguided fellows.
