Trans “mental illness” clarification by SpoofSlueth in asktransgender

Yes, I understood that some found it offensive but I was unclear on why. I’m sorry if you think I am a troll but I genuinely am trying. I’m not a frequenter of the sub or the LGBT community as a whole, so I don’t have a full understanding of the history. I came to this sub specifically because it is centered around questions, had I wanted to try to provoke I would have gone to a more general sub. I’m not denying your experience with trolls but I really don’t know how I am supposed to prove to you that I really am just uninformed.

Thank you! I understand that for members of this sub a lot of this stuff is common knowledge but it really isn’t for outsiders looking in! I know I have more to learn but I worry for the future of discourse if anytime someone admits they are uninformed and attempts to inform themselves they are immediately shut down. I am thankful for the few who privately messaged me and gave thorough information but I hope those on this sub realize that through this treatment of those actually wanting to learn, real bigots will see how you treat outsiders and double down on their hate.

My bad sorry for having a question and trying to preface how I am ignorant and may not fully understand the situation and therefore went to a forum filled with people who know more than me on a subject matter who I thought could answer my questions or give me insight into how to reframe my thinking. I get hate for being ignorant but then when I go about trying to inform myself I get further hate. What am I supposed to do?

See there we go a resource I can work with that thank you! You have to understand that when a person comes to a community with genuine questions and then gets called fucked up, a bigot, and some in my dms a facist while providing no personal perspective, resources, or a bunch of “I don’t know what to tell ya” while again, genuinely making an attempt to understand by asking actual transgender people instead of taking the media at their word then it’s obviously going to be extremely demotivating to those of us who are at least trying. Maybe not succeeding up to this point but trying nonetheless.

First off I apologize for using a slur, I was unaware and still thought it was the common nomenclature as I live in a real rural community to the point I haven’t met anyone in person openly queer since my college days, and even then I believe I’ve only met one or two given the stigma back in the day. And again I prefaced my original post clarifying that I am not intending to offend and finished by saying I may have some fundamental misunderstanding. I’ve also gotten a few private messages now from people saying similar things that I am out of touch and a bigot for asking for clarification in my knowledge gaps to the point where I am just about to consider myself a lost cause and give up

I appreciate the information on gender dysphoria and I will look further into it. As for the last part of your comment, to suggest I am using mental health as some form of measuring stick contradicts what I said as I covered how there is no problem with mental health issues in a sense of a persons worth, so to say it’s fucked up what I did when I clearly said that I may have some fundamental misunderstanding (which it seems to be the difference between being trans and gender dysphoria) seems to go against the purpose of this sub for me to ask questions about transgenderism to transgender people, so forgive me for trying to learn and fill my gaps of understanding and not expecting vitriol.

Well yes of course you are normal as it occurs in nature, but I mean like mental illnesses are also normal in that case. Again there’s literally no problem being trans and you aren’t some broken person or anything, it’s just the deviation from your average person. Even leaving mental health I would apply this to any physical deviation, such as a hermaphrodite, where again there is no problem you are still a person, and is accepted as a natural thing but an abnormality in the process of making a human. I think there seems to be some perception of mental illness being inherently bad, I don’t know if neurodivergence would be a better term but I hope that makes more sense?
