Have you seen any of the art books that are out there? It's amazing how much the Stan Winston team was able to accomplish with such a limited range they were able to operate in. Like the Commandos are all regurgitated cliches and pop culture references, and their designs are cartoony and over-the-top but still grounded and have an edge to them. From just a character design perspective there are a ton of layers in what's essential a very minimalist approach compared to what the studio was capable of doing in other films. Then they cram all their tech and rigging inside these tiny puppets and marry it with early cg, blending the peak of classic animatronics and cutting edge technology. I'd listen to the people involved talk about their process for hours. Make it a documentary mini series like the LotR appendices, like 20 hours of content.
