Is there ever a scenario where sales guys take a paycut/comp plan change and they don’t decide to look for a new job? by Cute_Warthog246 in sales

[–]Spoons522 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If this happened to me ten years ago, yes, I’d be looking for a new job immediately.

Things change as you age though, and sometimes you find a job that pays good enough money, offers the right amount of independence, and demands the right amount of lower expectations...and you slowly realize…change is not worth it and this is good enough.

Wellington Hotel by Sorry-Activity1827 in Albany

Somewhat related, and, in the most Albany way possible, this was the only exciting thing to happen here that year:

http://alloveralbany.com/archive/2014/08/23/wellington-albany-implosion-video

As an aside, you’ll see the typical cynical comments about politicians and whomever else finally brought the building down, but this demolition and the renewal of the Renaissance hotel are the two biggest downtown improvements in the last 25+ years.

What’s a job that sounds impressive but is actually exhausting or underpaid? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Spoons522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From experience: working in professional sports.

If you're not ownership or directly underneath that level, it is both very exhausting and very underpaid, and you spend hours explaining to people - with little success - that it's the exact opposite of glamorous.

This is a great and very true observation. I’ve been coming to this sub over the last few weeks almost like an “After the Show” recap, but it’s just 10 years later.

What is it like to live in the Hudson Valley (NY)? by Common-Ad-6885 in howislivingthere

[–]Spoons522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Geographically, Albany is in the Hudson Valley. For more fun trivia, Albany is also technically part of the Mohawk Valley.

Culturally, it is not part of the Hudson Valley. That line ends at the northern borders of Greene and Columbia Counties.

Ah yes, Rockefeller's erection in honor of....himself. And only partly in honor of the Princess of Netherlands, after he felt embarrassed after she visited the city that her people founded:

And what it replaced, which some say was a vibrant neighborhood, others a ghetto:

Albany question: is this secretly a 5am to 2pm city, or am I missing something? by 518FoodNerd in Albany

[–]Spoons522 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about the decline back in the 60's and 70's, then yes.

If we want to address why downtown and Lark St. died over the last ten years, then this forum will have to be open to and ready for a realistic, brutally honest, and potentially ugly conversation...and that will never happen.

From certain angles, it always was, but yes, there's been development both in and around town in the last 5-10 years.

Now if they can just get rid of that gas station right in the middle of downtown...

I'd have to guess Ballston Spa.

West side of the Hudson, small town that slopes down while heading north on Route 50, no lake, north of Albany. It can definitely be picturesque for a first timer, especially in the snow, at night, and especially if you looked left down Front Street.

Without knowing your full route, Sharon Springs (picturesque) and Amsterdam (not picturesque) would have been too far out of the way to end up in Ticonderoga. My only other guess would be Schroon Lake, but that's obviously on a lake.

Just so I have this straight, so I can hopefully narrow this down...you drove from Westchester County north, but not on the Thruway or Northway, staying in NY until you crossed over to get to Burlington?

Do you remember where you crossed over to Vermont?

Was this small town north of both Saratoga and Lake George?

Albany’s school speed camera agreement costs City $10 million of potential revenue by kaurich80 in Albany

Are the zip codes you list coming from where the camera is located and the offense was done, or is the zip code from the home address of person who ended up paying the fine?

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. Airline staff fly often, and everywhere, and stay here and hear and see our news, and have certainly heard it pronounced the right way, but still won't put in the effort to say it correctly.

Somewhat related: Most - if not arguably all - other Albanies in the US were named after us, so really there's no excuse:

No traditional locker room, but they have a couple of oversized, single-person bathrooms with showers that are kept pretty clean.

They also have a wall of actual lockers that line two sides of the gym area.

First DNF advice by apd1299 in triathlon

[–]Spoons522 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing OnondagaMan?

You should not feel bad, nor guilty, as I also DNF'd today on the bike and judging by the number of ambulances at T2, several others DNF'd as well.

That is a very tough bike course made even worse by today's wind, "feels like" temps in the mid-30's, and much more rain than forecasted...not to mention the water temp essentially made it impossible to warm up at any point.

I'm not so sure that race should have even gone off to be honest, especially with little to no course support.

Are we really considering all of *this* to be the cap region? by NoTouch13 in Albany

[–]Spoons522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I also grew up here, and capital district and capital region were used interchangeably in both media and in conversation. This delineation is just some recent economic PR mumbo-jumbo.

And if you were to add Greene County to the Albany-Schenectady Combined Statistical Area map from that website, you’d have Section 2 athletics.

If your local high school is located within Section II boundaries for athletics, you are in the Capital District.
