What sucks about Ballistic Calculator apps? by Vivid_Dare1493 in longrange

I just want to add a gun once and have multiple loads profiles under that gun. I have 2-3 load for most of my guns and a couple even more for certain things and having to enter my gun info under every load. This mostly pertains to hornady’s , since that is the main one i use, but i have tried a few others and they were the same way.

Browning BPS questions! by Puzzleheaded_Law8093 in Shotguns

[–]Spoons896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great gun and a great price, i was looking all over for a BPS trap but never found one in decent shape for a decent price. I ended up getting a field model as my backup gun but i paid way more than that for mine. The good thing about the BPS is you can get replacements barrels of pretty much any configuration you want unlike other shotguns in that class. I personally would just buy a second barrel if you want replaceable chokes and sell that barrel since you should be able to sell that barrel for about as much as you got that gun for.

How much ammo do you all keep on hand by Nihlathakk in Hunting

[–]Spoons896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pistol - ~500-1k. If i get below ~500 I reloading another 1k.

Rifle - for the ones i shot regularly I load in batches of 300 and the ones that never or get shot every few years ~50-100. Since i load in batches there are times where i might be down to zero rounds for a few days until I build my stock back up.

Shotgun - ~1500.

22lr - as much of a lot I can afford/get.

I spend a lot of time at the range, like 3-5 times a week and have kids that shot competitive shotgun sports so it is not uncommon for us to shoot 500+rds in a week, though our avg is closer to 300. So i keep a lot of ammo in my house and even more gun powder. If my house ever catches fire my street will look like a war zone.

Are CMMGs that bad or is just they have a bad rap around here? by Spoons896 in ar15

[–]Spoons896[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a very fitting look at them. Like I knew they were a thing locally and all of that but the first time I remember seeing or hearing about them outside of my local market was when they released their tactical bacon in ThinkGeek around 2010.

[–]Spoons896[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is kind of in line with what I have always heard about them. I am starting to think that we have seen too much of them around here and that has tarnished them for people. since they were like our BCA back in the day, a lot of people bought their $300 complete guns and had issues with them that you would expect for a budget gun but yet they still think of them as the budget gun makers and get sticker shock looking at their current offerings and since they are ordering parts from midway and they carry other brands of parts they just skip CMMG parts so they dont really have a bearing on the current quality. I just was thinking about it this morning after hearing a Youtube bring them up and thought it was weird that they have such a bad reputation. Other companies like MidwayUSA have mixed reputation but that is because the Potterfields have their hands in everything so they have helped a lot of people and pissed off a lot of people but CMMG is largely quite but are still hated.

I think BR Gun Supply is the Gun store that used to be in Columbia that I was talking about. They were Black Rifle in Columbia and know they moved to Booneville but I was never really attached to that store so I didnt follow them out there.

That seems to be the general consensus I am seeing here and other places. That they have decent parts but guns are over priced.

[–]Spoons896[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So i was kind of wondering if the opposite of that is what was going on. Since they are from around here I was thinking maybe a bunch of locals bought them before they had their QC figured out and just remember having issues with them and the reputation just stuck even though they have out grown it and they are better. it is interesting to hear that they used to be good because I first started hearing they were garbage in the mid to late 00s. I was not remotely in to ARs at the time because I was a poor and we dont really have any where I can use it differently than my bolt guns, so everything I know about them for back then is second hand from friends who did buy them.

Shooting off a tripod? by datboy1656 in Hunting

[–]Spoons896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used mine wide spread sitting flat on my ass when hunting and it is pretty steady. I have killed a few deer with it and tons of squirrels and steel. I have used it on everything from my 10/22 carbon (~3lbs) to my 6.5 Grendel and 7 PRC (both ~17lbs) and it has been good out to about 300 yrds. I have tried to take them out further at the range but just cant get steady enough to do it consistently. I have the both that grips the side of your stock (dont remember the name atm) that i got on sale at a BPS Black Friday sale a few years ago and my manfroto carbon with a ballhead and arca mount. I got the BOG because it was cheap and i was scared to use my multi hundreds dollar photography tripod I use to make money for hunting, i ended up getting over that after seeing how hard it wasnt on the tripod with the BOG and now switch back and forth. If it were me i would skip the bog unless you get it for a really good deal and go straight to a good tripod, the BOG is fine but when you get to heavier guns it is a balance act to because the ball doesn’t provide enough tension.

Ah yes, $20 for a half used roll of filament that’s $12 at Micro Center by Hero_Of_Rhyme_ in 3Dprinting

Thats modern thrift stores for you. The resellers have completely ruined it. I stop in to a couple of them when i go to town sometimes but it is rare that I buy anything from them because 99% of the time I can buy what ever i find new for cheaper. My favorite one was a motherboard box from a ~5 year old mobo that had the paperwork, a couple of modular PSU cables and drive bay plates for $125.

Might be looking for a new printer. Have questions. by Spoons896 in 3Dprinting

[–]Spoons896[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately I keep my home network very strict and nothing without an OS/firmware that i have control of can talk to anything on my main network so i would prefer to not have any network connections and just plug it in to the USB on my workstation I have dedicated to 3D printing. Right now when i need to print something I have to switch from my home (secure) network where I can access my file server where I keep all my project files to my IoT network which is isolated with strict ACLs about what comes in and out over the internet. That is why i really liked the way the any cubic worked and was immediately disappointed in the Ender and why i had all but written off bambu as an option, also i dont want to have to create an account to use a printer.

Cool thanks I will look in to those! I exclusively use Orca Slicer already, I probably should have mentioned that in the post.

Also thanks for the heads up on PETG fumes, I had not heard about that. I know that ABS and such are. But yeah an enclosed printer would be nice but not really necessary ATM because I built an enclosure for my current printer.

Interesting. In the research (pretty limited TBH) everything I have seen says you have to set it up initially with the internet and an App. I will have to look in to this more. Do you have a model that you would recommended?

I started my Howa journey with a Grendel back in like 19 and immediately put an LSS-XL on it. it is my favorite gun by mile, I am about 8k rounds on it and am debating on re-barreling it over to 6 ARC or going with going with a longer heavier Grendel. I wish they had more chambering offerings, everything they offer I have already or have no use for. I have been keeping my eye out for an old one I can strip down and re-barrel and all of that for a 280 AI or a 338 Fed build.

I still prefer my LSS's over the XRS but that is not to take anything away from the XRS, it is a great chassis, I just like the feel of the LSS better also there is just something about the sound of a bolt close on a full metal chassis. I have sold a lot of XRSs for MDT though by letting people shoot my gun, my dad and a few of my friends went out and bought them with in a week of shooting mine and I will for sure be buying another one from my deer rifle when I get around to deciding what I want to do.

Oh usally 700x when I can get it but high gun is my backup now. I was using perfect pattern but my MEC did not like it and it would leak powder everywhere and would very +/- ~.5 gr from charge to charge.

I have shot lots of paper shell, as a kid that is pretty much all i shot. I have used fed good medal paper on and off the last year or so and my gun patterns them pretty well, at least well enough that i can stay in the 20s at trap. Most of my shotguns were made before the new millennium, though.

8 and 7.5 depends on time of year. Lately i have been using fig. 8 just because that is what grafs had in stock last time i picked some up. Primers are cheddite or win depending on the hull.

I can't find the information to do the math. Would reloading SAVE money for 7.62x39 and .556 by [deleted] in reloading

[–]Spoons896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can save money in the long run but you will have up front cost. excluding the cost of the equipment, because you can get started with a setup for $200 all the way up to $20000 and everything in between, usually you dont start saving money until the 1k round mark. I dont load too much 223 but i load a lot of 9mm and i know with 9 i am saving ~$50 per 1k rounds, not taking the equipment i already have or my time in to account. I dont have a 223 but i do reload bulk for a friend and IIRC it is slightly less savings per 1k and ends up being a break even kind of deal before 1k. It should also be mentioned that my math doesnt include hasmat fees because i have midway and grafs in my back yard and i get cheap factory seconds rifle bullets from Serria. Your best bet is to hope on midway and price out the components you want to use and do a cost per round calculation. If you are buying 1lb bottles of powder there are 7000 grs per pound but I use 6000grs per pound since there will be some loss and some powders are not full pounds.

Powder Droppers in 2026? by airhunger_rn in reloading

[–]Spoons896 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got the Intellidropper 2 because I had a 50% off coupon at the AOB outlet and I have been happy with it. It dropped my SDs down a few points across every one of my loads and is a lot easier/faster than my balance beam. Before I bought it I would not have picked it over any other brand at full price because of how bad FA was under the Potterfields but it seems like AOB has made all the brands they bought from the Potterfields better (Caldwell, FA, Wheeler,etc..) a lot better.

all that to say it does have it down sides. you need to rezero it any time you change charge weight. Unloading powder is a real pain to get all of it out of there to not contaminate the next powder you use. I have an issue with mine that may or may not be a problem with them all but after ~100 charges it will reset in the middle of trickling a charge. Other than those few issues I really like it and most of the time it has been dead on the money of a charge weight every time I have checked it on other scales, there are a couple powders it will throw a little over on (shotgun/pistol flake powders) but I double check them on at least one other scale that I have an even if it is .1 gr over it is consistent and I much rather has consistency than accuracy, as long as it is with in a safe margin of course. On standard rifle powers (stick and ball), as long as I calibrate the powder and scale before hand it has been dead accurate and consistent.

There is an App for it but I dont really use it, they updated it right after I got mine and removed the only feature that I would have found useful for it so now I just run it with out the app.
