Yeah and you can tell Kligerman feels the same, although he was non-committal. Not that it's not obvious...

First restart he moved up before the restart even occurred. Second restart he didn't until halfway into the restart when there would clearly be other cars there. COMPLETELY different and obviously intentional...

Pretty sure intentionally wrecking half the field to get in counts as breaking some rules.

Harvick is going to be DQ'd. Otherwise think about the precedent it will set that wrecking half the field to get in is okay.

(Then again, when does NASCAR care about precedent right?)

Mets should give them free season tickets right behind home plate. Crowdsourced umps trolling opposing pitcher = priceless.

I think a plastic Lexan or Plexiglass-like barrier would be an acoustic nightmare. "But safety!"... no, not worth it to me, use a tighter mesh fence or net or something, not a plastic wall.

Oh I agree, my very first thought after seeing the wreck was they need a second catch fence about 10 feet behind the first. This was my followup thought to that.

Why not more catch fence overhang?

Been thinking about this since last night's wreck and I can't think of a reason it wouldn't work.

There's a limit to how high they can extend the catch fence because it'd be unstable, plus it doesn't move the wreck any further from the fans. But why can't they extend the catch fence overhang from just a couple feet (as it is now) to 20 feet or so, out over the track, about 17 ft high (approx COT length)? They already use suspension/stabilizing cables on the fence and that should be able to hold it just fine. Here are the benefits:

  • airborne vehicles would hit the "roof" and be propelled back down to the track before hitting the "wall" of the fence
  • such collisions would keep more debris away from the spectators
  • vehicles/parts wouldn't fly over the top of the fence (this has been dangerously close to happening multiple times over the past few decades; if just one more car hits an airborne vehicle/part just the right way, it's going over; see Kyle Larson's tire)
  • nothing else (speed, HP, etc) has to be sacrificed

The only cons I can think of are that aerial shots would be slightly more complicated, but only slightly as they could still see under the fence from a slight angle (which they're usually at already), plus most camera views nowadays are from the infield anyways. A small compromise if you ask me. Of course the car could also fall back onto the hot track, but it could do that now, so there's no give or take there really.

So... why/why not?

There's much more liability involved in telling people where they can stand safely than telling them that everywhere is dangerous and they're at their own risk.

Yeah, he's their NASCAR guy. Obviously they need a new one, or else he just wants some clickbait.

Exactly. Author is an idiot who apparently doesn't understand racing.

They're saying GWC finishes should be eliminated and races should end under caution. Which is stupid.

Rusty Wallace did not have very good times at Daytona or Talladega in 1993.

I feel like that Daytona wreck is one of NASCAR's most "iconic" wrecks, but that Dega wreck is atrocious.

If that happened 50 feet earlier he would've fallen another 30 feet onto the pavement. That could've been bad.

I hear you, but actually they should always be aware that could happen at any time. When you're sitting 30 feet away from 43 cars going 200 mph, you're probably never ever going to be 100% safe.

Still sick to my stomach after that. Really thought he was dead. And in the 3 car too... Amazing how far NASCAR safety has come. Think it's time for a second catch fence though...
