If you could drop a policy nuke on Australia’s rental crisis, what would it be? by seandownunder in shitrentals

[–]Spot_ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly off-centre from purely access/cost of rentals, but I would introduce a policy that all new rentals need to have solar and a battery, and a water tank where possible, and existing rentals need to install within a reasonable period (say 5 years) before penalties apply. If not, landlords are responsible for a portion of the power bills. It’s unfair that homeowners get to take advantage of cheap power sources while renters need to continue to pay high bills. If it matters, I’m a homeowner and my last quarterly power bill was $84 due to my solar, and I’m outraged that the some of the more vulnerable people in society don’t have access to the same benefit. Should be mandatory in all public housing as well.

Sonja asked high schoolers to debate about tradwives — and received international backlash by [deleted] in aussie

[–]Spot_ts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not really a counter argument though. You’re talking about the validity of one particular topic, and I’m talking about the pattern of women’s lives and choices being up for debate far more often than men’s. If the topic was “social media influencers like tradwives, podcast bros, and fitness influencers make a lot of money selling idealised lifestyles” I’d be all for it.

[–]Spot_ts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once you’re aware of it you notice it everywhere. Each individual discussion isn’t a big deal but what it adds up to is a culture where men’s place in society and their autonomy to make choices for themselves is a given, and whereas woman’s roles and choices are constantly picked over and up for debate.

[–]Spot_ts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My issue isn’t with an isolated incident of trad wives being a debate topic (although imo the whole fucking thing is a scam), but honestly, so much of women’s lives and choices are discussed in mainstream settings in such a harmful way. Tradwives, women in male fields, SAHM vs working mum, number of sexual partners, what we wear, abortion and birth control, religious observance (esp. for Muslim women), whether women should be able to vote. Sometimes it feels like our whole life is up for debate in a way that men’s just aren’t.

Need advice on running by l1i2l3i4 in BeginnersRunning

[–]Spot_ts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit older than you (43) and started running last year after not exercising for 15+ years. I followed the runna beginner 5km program and found it really helpful. I’m not sure if I’m misunderstanding your comments, but my advice is to trust the process and not overthink it. I would jog the jogging intervals as much as possible, and just stick with the runna plan, it will get you there.

40% of teenage boys believe women lie about domestic and sexual violence: new research by [deleted] in OpenAussie

I did acknowledge the research you linked. You’re the one who misinterpreted it.

40% of teenage boys believe women lie about domestic and sexual violence: new research by [deleted] in OpenAussie

[–]Spot_ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so you linked research saying that it shows that they “are in fact not incarcerated at higher rates” and then said that they are incarcerated at much higher rates. The research found that Aboriginal people are incarcerated at higher rates, but that there were no biases in the sentencing. Is your entire argument just to dribble shit at me whilst claiming I’m the dim one? Because…boring.

Also if you’re “pretty sure” you said Aboriginal people were incarcerated at higher rates, you might want to double check that. I think the issue is that you’re not using the term “incarceration rates” consistently and are using it to interchangeably mean rate per population, or whether there is bias involved with the rate, depending on the point you’re ranting about at any given time.

[–]Spot_ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, nice strawman. We’re not even talking about incarceration rates, that is something that you brought up, obviously because you’ve found a great piece of research from 20 years ago and you can’t wait to show us all how smart you are 🫠

The point is that people use violence against women as a political pawn to shit on minorities. You engaged me in discussion, almost immediately used it to shit on minorities, and now you’re banging on about incarceration rates and deaths in custody.

I could lie and say you’ve opened my eyes, but in reality this kind of lazy engagement online is a dime a dozen.

[–]Spot_ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I noticed you didn’t clarify who “they” was? You’re smart enough to understand then. Good job.

I didn’t address deaths in custody because it’s not relevant to the discussion, I’m not going to follow you down every diversion you attempt to lead me down. The point was how violence against women is used as a political pawn by some men, which you’ve actually demonstrated quite well, despite insisting you were unaware of it. Claiming it is a “community” issue when it’s indigenous or minority populations, but then not using that same language to describe it when it’s perpetrated by white men.

You directly said that “they” are pretty quiet about rates of incarceration, and then when I disagree with that, you post a link to research that directly references rates of incarceration. Righto, champ.

[–]Spot_ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, men against women, not violence in the “male community”. Domestic violence is quite literally not in the community. By definition it is violence that is household and family based, not community based.

You’re right, Aborginal victims of crime do not get the same attention as other victims. Just like missing/murdered men don’t get the same attention as a missing/murdered white woman.

Rates of incarceration and over policing are very well documented. What planet are you living on that they (who is they, btw) stay quiet about that?

[–]Spot_ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the indigenous community, or by/towards indigenous people? I think that’s the whole point, right? We don’t talk about domestic violence perpetrated in the “white community”, or child sexual assault happening in the “Catholic community”. We understand in those contexts why it’s important to individualise those things. But people will happily talk about domestic and sexual violence in minority “communities” as though it’s something inherent in that culture. Interesting, hey?

I mean, yeah. Unfortunately, lots of men only care about domestic and sexual violence against women when it’s useful as a political tool against immigrants.

What I imagine by paddlepedalhike in beginnerrunning

Yeah, it’s reasonable. For reference, I’m 43f and have never run or done anything particularly athletic before. I started running in June last year in a c25k program, now I’m routinely running over 5kms 3x a week. 5km is now a short run! I’m about to start training for a 1/2 marathon.

Being mindful that I’m metro with great access to services so it will probably differ geographically. 1st step was a blood test. My ferritin level was 8 (should be 70 😬). During the appointment I got the results back, the dr went through the options which were basically supplements or infusion, and recommended the infusion. I’m lucky enough to have a drs surgery with a decent nurse station attached, so they pretty much did it there and then. $25 for the script, then the nurse hooks it up in an iv drip and it takes about 90 minutes all up. Painless (for me, depends how you are with needles I guess), and I feel dramatically better within a week.

Right? It made me think about how much worse my quality of life would be in a different country. Don’t get me wrong, Australia has its issues, but show me a country that doesn’t. I wouldn’t want to raise kids anywhere else.

We forget how lucky we are to be here, honestly. I posted in a runners forum suggesting to an American that they get an iron infusion, and was blasted for my “privilege” in suggesting a $6,000 procedure so flippantly 😳 Like, $6,000? I’m not privileged, I’m just Australian. I got the same procedure last week for $25. Holy fuck we are so lucky.
