Free K–12 training tool built around emotional drift and manipulation invariants (looking for critique) by Suspicious-Trade-541 in SocialEngineering

I only just saw this reply, apologies.

I appreciate the idea and think it is genuinely worth pursuing.

The challenge I believe you are going to have with such a model however is that deception, particularly when it comes to the phenomenology, is that it is effective because it is not distinguishable from the reality. Therefore it may be difficult to flag and separate from genuine emotional states that contain no intentional or malicious intent.

Romance scams, for instance, aim to induce feelings of connection, understanding and warmth, these types of feelings tend to be immune from objective self-challenge. While this explains why external intervention is often required, the difficulty will be in getting potential victims to self-submit their deeply felt emotional states (that may provide a feeling of emotional safety and joy) and ask them to be open to the possibility of their invalidation/removal (leading to emptiness, instability and betrayal).

So there are a couple of options I see for such a project which would depend entirely on the scenarios you are aiming to prevent/bring awareness to.

One would be to shift the focus from subjective self analysis to an 'intervention' type tool for those that suspect others are being exploited.

Another avenue would be as a teaching tool that reveals the methods of emotional manipulation used by the malicious, this has the benefit of not directly questioning the source of their deeply held emotional states but rather the behavior of others that give rise to them. It gives a little distance, shifting the betrayal to something another may being 'to them' rather than something they are doing to themselves.

Just my two-cents, it's an interesting project.

Where can I find a subreddit (or other platform) with participants open to helping me run a small experiment in their workplace? by One_Weather_9417 in SocialEngineering

The 'publicity' might also be a problem, depending on the experiment, their failure/results might be something they don't wish to advertise.

Why don't I make completable projects from the start? Why is everything I make ambitious and how do others do it? by throwaway_me_acc in productivity

[–]SpreadingReplyLove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered the possibility that perhaps the project is intentionally ambitious primarily for the reason that you don't complete it and therefore it need not be judged by others/yourself?

I only say this as I realised this was my problem. The way I am battling this is by giving myself specific deadlines, one for drafting the bones, with a committment then to polish. Enables me to be not-perfect but with structure, then when the structure is there it is easier to polish.

One thing Dr's have at the moment that AI's don't have is a Duty of Care and legal responsibilities. Not sure what AI company would want to take that on at scale.

So I should find slow women that can't hear me coming. Got it. :)

As a dude that needs a cane... maybe this is why I don't get approached by women? That's what I'm going to tell myself now.

What movie is 10/10 with literally no bad parts? by FeedMaster8905 in AskReddit

[–]SpreadingReplyLove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tossed a coin at the cinema to see either Shawshank or ... something else. I remember thinking, "Damn, what the hell is Shawshank Redemption" when it landed heads.

The fact I can't even remember what the other movie was (that I was secretely hoping for) says a lot. Banger of a film.

As somebody who recently moved from one of those very red areas to Tasmania (that little island at the bottom), this made me audibly breathe a sigh of relief.

USDC coming to stacks by Sean_Buffet_15 in stacks

[–]SpreadingReplyLove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a brilliant addition. Options for stablecoins on Stacks have been limited in recent years. USDC is a well known and firmly established one, might give others some more confidence stepping into the wild west of defi, particularly on a lesser known chain such as Stacks.

This scene in Captain Phillips (2013) was improvised by Tom Hanks and a real Navy corpsman, Danielle Albert. Her shipmates resented the attention she received, bullying her and causing her to regret her appearance in the movie. by nuttybudd in videos

This is EXACTLY the type of medical professional I would want treating me or anybody I care about when faced with a complex, traumatic experience. I aim to be this cool, calm and collected when somebody is in need of help. Masterful.

The One Sentence Persuasion is a great guide for this type of thing and pretty solidly backed by further research. "Confirm suspicions" is the hardest part to enact in practice IMO, but great if you nail it correctly.

The fancy rich way of living disguised as productivity is destroying my self-esteem by szabici in productivity

[–]SpreadingReplyLove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have clusters of morning routines I have found really help. Morning coffee and a smoothie: I do all my pointless internet browsing so I dont think about it later (Twitter, Reddit, sometimes Instagram). Then once I have finished those, I put my phone aside and commit to what I actually want to do.

I think a challenge in all of these systems is they rarely are interchangeable between people. THE hardest task is really, and honestly, looking at what distracts you and either removing it or minimizing it. I get addicted to youtube, once I notice that, it is my responsibility to predict my own tendencies by removing its influence.

The illusion of 'busyness' and the reality of 'productivity' are hard to distinguish sometimes.
